Charles H. Hendricks

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Charles H. Hendricks, a native of Southampton County, died July 13, 2006, in Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth. He was the widower of Doretha W. Hendricks.

Survivors include one daughter, Angela H. Harrison of Richlands; six sisters, Fannie Sue Stevenson of Enfield, Corene Perry of Portsmouth, Elaine Hendricks and Doretha Hendricks, both of Murfreesboro and Laverne Edwards and Evonne Hendricks, both of Fayetteville; four brothers, Jessie Hendricks of Philadelphia, Pa., Arthur Hendricks of New York and Charles &uot;Son&uot; Hendricks and McCoy Hendricks, both of Murfreesboro; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth.

Annie G. Jenkins

AHOSKIE – Annie Gray Jenkins 82, a native of Bertie County, died July 14, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Henry Jenkins.

Mrs. Jenkins was a homemaker, and a member of Carpenter’s Shop Church.

A funeral service was conducted Monday at Carpenter’s Shop Church by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Burial was in Highland Memorial Gardens. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Earl Jenkins and Charles Watt Jenkins, both of Ahoskie; two sisters; Della Elizabeth Swain of Hampton, Va. and Dorothy Jean Dunning of Ahoskie; one brother, Charlie L. Cobb of Ahoskie; six grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren.

Jo Jo Archer

POWELLSVILLE n Jo Jo Archer, died July 16, 2006.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Rena P. Rascoe

WINDSOR n Rena Pearl Rascoe, a native of Windsor, died July 12, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Church of God for All People, Windsor, by the Rev. Joseph Watson. Interment was in the church cemetery. Cherry Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include a sister, Pattie H. Watson; brother, Joseph Hill; and her father, David Smallwood Sr. of Windsor.

Daniels

RICH SQUARE – Mrs. Jane Elizabeth “Betsy” Bolton Daniels, age 61 died on Monday, July 17, 2006 at her home in Rich Square.

She was born on December 5, 1944, to Emmett and Mildred Bolton of Rich Square, NC.

She attended school in Rich Square where she excelled in academics and was chief cheerleader for the varsity sports.

She graduated as class valedictorian from Rich Square High School in 1963.

Two years and three months later, she graduated from East Carolina College with a double major in math and science and a minor in social studies.

During her freshman year, she’d married her childhood sweetheart, Earl Daniels, who was a senior at ECC at the time.

After graduation, she taught high school math while Earl attended U.S. Army training.

After the end of the school year, Betsy joined Earl at Fort Benning, GA.

There she worked as a journalist for the base newspaper, covering stories such as President Lyndon B. Johnson’s visit to Fort Benning and John Wayne’s filming of The Green Berets.

In 1968, Earl departed for Vietnam and Betsy returned to Greenville, NC, where she gave birth to their first child, Karen Lea.

Upon Earl’s return, the family moved to Indianapolis, IN.

There she gave birth to their second child, Andrew Earl, and became very active in the family’s local church and Officers’ Wives Club duties.

In 1975, the family was transferred to Heidelberg, Germany.

While there Betsy learned German and studied art.

Additionally, the family traveled throughout Germany, France, Austria, and Luxembourg.

After two years, the family was transferred to Belgium, a move that Betsy accomplished by herself since Earl was training in Munich.

While in Belgium, Betsy continued to study art and coordinate family trips into France, England, and Holland.

Betsy took special enjoyment in ensuring that her children understood the culture of each area they visited.

In 1979, the family moved to the Washington, DC area, following Earl’s next assignment.

After getting the family settled, Betsy returned to teaching, this time in a junior high.

After a couple of years, she realized that she wanted to be at home with her children more, so she became a nurse’s aide at a local elementary school.

She remained there until 1985, when the family received new assignment orders to Fort Bragg, NC.

At Fort Bragg, Betsy remained involved in many of the Officers’ Wives Club duties and volunteered work at the military dental clinic.

It was at Fort Bragg, in 1986, that Betsy was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

For the next twenty years, she fought the complications that resulted.

Although faced with these obstacles, Betsy continued to teach Sunday school until about the last three years of her life, during which she was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Betsy was a dedicated Christian, a devoted and supportive wife, and an adored mother.

She leaves behind her parents Emmett and Mildred Bolton of Rich Square; her brother, Tom; her husband of 43 years, Earl; two children, Karen of Lansdowne, VA, and Drew of Hickory, NC; four grandchildren, Ashley, Thomas, Kate, and Warren; a daughter-in-law, Paula; and a son-in-law, Rodney.

As of Monday, July 17, 2006, she began to soar in a healthy body with the heavenly angels.

Memorial services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 11 A.M. at the Rich Square Baptist Church in Rich Square, NC with the Rev. Bob Rogers officiating.

There will be a private interment, for the family following the service at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Sykes Funeral Service in Rich Square Tuesday evening from 7:00-8:30 P.M.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Rich Square Baptist Church, 116 West Jackson Street, Rich Square, NC
