WINTON- Former Hertford County Superintendent Dennis Deloatch is obviously not finished with the county’s school system.

Hertford County Board of Elections Director Sheila Privott confirmed on Friday the former superintendent, who left office embroiled in controversy, filed for candidacy to one of the three seats that are up for re-election on November 7.

Deloatch’s filing brings the total number of candidates for the November election to seven, and comes exactly one week after the last board incumbent to file, the Rev. Patrick Young, entered the race.

Young was one of three board members along with Wendall Hall and Board Chairman Davis Shields who voted to not renew Deloatch’s contract after nearly four years on the job.

After Deloatch’s dismissal, the former superintendent made public comments attesting to what he felt was inappropriate behavior and suspect decision making by the school board.

In an interview with the News-Herald earlier this month, Deloatch accused certain board members of making his non-renewal an &uot;unethical, humiliating, disgraceful and unprofessional&uot; process.

Deloatch claimed that it was jealousy and control issues that led to his demise.

The seats of board members Ron Baker and John Horton are also up for re-election this fall. Both men have filed for re-election.

Should Deloatch be elected to the board, he would be forced to share duties with at least two board members who not only recommended that Deloatch not be rehired, but also endured verbal attacks from many Deloatch supporters toward the end of the former superintendent’s tenure.

Along with Young, Horton, Baker and Deloatch; Marcus Williams, Susan Barnes Williams and Carolyn Mitchell Vaughan have also filed for the expiring seats.

Filing continues until 12 noon Aug. 4 at the Hertford County Board of Elections.
