Teen charged in fatal accident

AHOSKIE – Charges have been filed against a Bertie County teen involved in a fatal accident near here early Sunday morning.

Courtney Winborne, 17, of Republican Road near Aulander stands charged with leaving the scene of an accident following a mishap that claimed the life of 24-year-old Jo Jo Archer Jr. of Ahoskie.

The charge is a misdemeanor.

According to Sgt. Todd Lane with the Ahoskie office of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Winborne answered to the charge yesterday (Wednesday) when she voluntarily met with NCHP Trooper Jason Jones who investigated the accident.

Winborne was arrested and placed under a $1,000 secured bond.

Jones’ report showed that Archer was about one-half mile south of Ahoskie at the time of the accident. The report revealed that Archer walking in the southbound lane where he was struck by a 1998 Oldsmobile driven by Winborne. That vehicle, which was traveling south on U.S. 13, is owned by James Edgar Lee Jr. of the same Aulander address.

According to Sgt. Lane, Winborne left the scene of the 5:20 a.m. accident and returned, accompanied by her mother, at 7 a.m. The Highway Patrol was still at the scene upon their return.

Sgt. Lane also confirmed that Winborne carried a regular North Carolina driver’s license, having graduated through a new program in the state that limits the times a young driver is allowed to operate a motor vehicle.
