WINTON – The Hertford County School Board has a new challenger and a board veteran as candidates to consider for this fall’s election.

Hertford County Elections Director Sheila Privott confirmed that Carolyn Mitchell Vaughan of Ahoskie has filed for one of the seats on the school board.

Vaughan would be a newcomer to the local political process.

Keeping with his recent promise, incumbent board member Ron Baker has filed for re-election.

If elected, it would be Baker’s third term on the board.

To date, three individuals have filed for the three seats to be decided on the November 7 ballot.

Board incumbents John D. Horton and Rev. Patrick Young, whose seats are also open, have not filed for re-election.

Baker and Vaughan join Susan Barnes Williams of Murfreesboro as the only people to file to this point.

Filing began July 7 and will continue until 12 noon August 4.

The Hertford County Board of Elections is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 – 5 p.m.

There is a $5 fee for those who wish to file.
