WILSON – Randy Whitaker used everyone he had.

And it wasn’t quite enough.

Despite trailing by seven in the first inning and then leading twice be seven, Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 went 12 innings with league-leading Wilson before falling 22-21.

&uot;We got down 7-0, but we didn’t quit or fold,&uot; Whitaker said. &uot;We battled back and scored six in the second and took the lead in the third.&uot;

Whitaker’s dilemma came in the twelfth inning where he had a 21-18 lead, but had no fresh pitching arms as he had gone through five hurlers in the 12-inning marathon.

Wilson scored the four runs necessary to grab the come-from-behind win and left Ahoskie with the loss.

&uot;Ben Bright did an excellent job for us,&uot; Whitaker said. &uot;He came in during the first inning and got us out of some tight situations.&uot;

While pitching ended up being the issue, Whitaker said the loss could be contributed to one thing – errors.

&uot;Errors have killed us all year and the same thing happened Saturday,&uot; he said.

Wilson led 7-0 after one inning, but Post 102 rallied with six runs in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth to take a 14-7 advantage.

Wilson chipped away with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to make it 14-10, but Ahoskie added three in the eighth to go back up 17-10.

In the seventh, the wheels came off as Post 11 plated seven runs to deadlock the game.

Both Ahoskie and Wilson scored a run each in the ninth to send the game to extra frames. Both scored a single run in the tenth to continue the contest before Ahoskie had three in the twelfth and Post 11 countered with four.

Ben Bright (4-for-8) and Jacob Harrell (4-for-7) led Ahoskie with four hits each. Bright had three doubles and five RBIs and Harrell two extra-base hits and two RBIs during their at-bats.

Dusty Todd had a three-run homer in the third to give Post 102 the lead. He added two doubles and five RBIs in his 3-for-6 day at the plate.

Dustin Briggs and Lance Thomas were each 3-for-7 on the day while Heath Britt was 3-for-8. Each of the batters had two RBIs during the contest.

Jobie Thomas, Joe Whitehead and Michael Burton collected the other hits.
