Blanche T. Harris

PORTSMOUTH, Va. n Blanche “Granny” Taylor Harris, age 89, formerly of Ahoskie, passed away peacefully with her family and friends by her bedside at her daughter’s home in Portsmouth, VA, Saturday, June 24, 2006.

Mrs. Harris was born in Yadkin County, a daughter of the late Jessie W. and Dolly Sears Taylor and was a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

She worked in the garment factory in Ahoskie and at Harris Grocery on Main Street for many years.

Blanche, along with her late husband, W. C. “Buck” Harris, also owned and operated

B & B Corner Grocery in Winton, NC for several years.

Leaving behind to remember her life and share memories are her daughter, Beulah Harris Cooper Pearce and husband, J. D. of Portsmouth, VA; a granddaughter, Amy Cooper Jernigan and husband, Jason, a

great grandson, Dakota Jernigan and a great granddaughter, Sierra Jernigan, all of Elm Grove, NC; a stepson, Frankie “Bucky” Harris and wife, Loretta; two step daughters-in-law, Ann Harris and Ruth Harris, all of Ahoskie, NC; a sister-in-law, Effie Taylor of Conway, NC; nine step grandchildren, Linda Johnson of Thomasville, NC, Brenda Reid of High Point, NC, Joan Forbes of Milton, FL, Linda “Lynn” Marinov of Douglasville, GA, Cynthia “Cyndy” Dilday of Ahoskie, NC, Randy Harris of Valparaiso, FL, Floyd James Harris, Jr. of Ahoskie, NC, Rita Pearce Jernigan of Elm Grove, NC and James “Jamie” Pearce of Ahoskie, NC; 17 step great

grandchildren; seven step great great-grandchildren; and other family members, numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Besides her parents and husband, Mrs. Harris was preceded in death by two step sons, Claude “CC” Harris and Floyd James “Jimmy” Harris, Sr., six brothers and two sisters.

A celebration of Mrs. Harris’ life service will be conducted on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Gregory Dalle-Tezze officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2006, and will assemble at the funeral home prior to services.

Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is serving the Harris family.

William White

BALTIMORE, Md. n William Horace White, 63, a native of Bertie County, died June 24, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 am. Wednesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

White was a truck driver for Up-To-Date Laundry, Baltimore.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise White of Baltimore; his mother, Hannah White of Colerain; daughters, Vanessa Goins and Tanja Janey, both of Baltimore; brothers, Richard White Jr., Josephcephus White and James G. Leary, all of Colerain; one sister, Agnes Chamblee of Colerain; and one grandchild.

Janice P. Lyon

WINDSOR n Janice Phelps Lyons, 78, a native of Bertie County, died June 24, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Henry Wise Lyon Jr.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cashie Baptist Church by Dr. Carroll Tarkington. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to either the Make a Wish Foundation or the Children’s Miracle Network. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Lyon was a homemaker and a member of Cashie Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Beth Lyon Ralph of Port Charlotte, FL; two sisters, Lillian Phelps Crisce of CT, Barbara Jean Lagarene of Long Island, NY; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Stephanie L. Tucker

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Stephanie L. Tucker, 39, died June 22, 2006, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. S

he was a daughter of Luther Burrus and Ruby Skeeter and stepdaughter of Larry Skeeter.

Survivors include her parents; Luther Burrus, Ruby Skeeter; stepfather, Larry Skeeter; one son, Rico Walker of Norfolk; three sisters, Leslie Holt of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer Williams of Norfolk and Karen Walker of Portsmouth; two brothers, Frank Walker of Portsmouth and Robert Baker of Gates; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, Sunbury, by the Rev. Virgil Corprew. Interment was at St. Paul’s Baptist Church Cemetery, Sunbury. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. was in charge.

Jessie R. Long

CONWAY – Jessie Ray Long, 71, died June 22, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Allen Chapel AME Church, Jackson. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, was in charge.

Gwendolyn Hawkins

GATES n Gwendolyn McClinton Hawkins, 82, a native of Gates County, died June 24, 2006.

Mrs. Hawkins was a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Freeman family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include one son, Graham Hawkins of Gates; one daughter, Penestine Lee of Gates; one brother, Roger McClinton of Drum Hill; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Michael M. White

Funeral services for Michael M. White of Durham, NC, will be held at Reynolds Funeral Home, 321 N. Maple Street, Ahoskie, NC, on Tuesday, June 27, 2006 at 2 p.m. Michael is the son of the late Chester and Alice White. He was born February 14, 1952 in Ahoskie, NC and departed this life on Friday, June 23, 2006 at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC. He received his elementary and high school education in Ahoskie, NC at R.L. Vann High School and later Michael received an undergraduate degree in Accounting with honors from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC.

He leaves to cherish his precious memory his surrogate daughter, Samantha A. Everette of Durham, NC; his grandmother, Ardell Askew of Ahoskie, NC; three aunts, Ethel Futrell of Ahoskie, NC, Helen White of Philadelphia, PA, and Olivia White of Newark, NJ; one uncle, Otis Jones of Portsmouth, VA; a special friend, Mary E. Daniels of Durham, NC, and many other relatives and friends.

Ida Jordan

AHOSKIE n Ida Jordan, died June 23, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mahlon Jernigan

AULANDER – Mahlon Jernigan, 80, of 307 Broad Street, died Monday, June 26,

2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

Mr. Jernigan was born in Bertie County, a son of the late G. D. and Moell Jernigan.

He was a graduate of Aulander High School and worked as a telegraph operator for Atlantic Coastline Railroad.

He was also a farmer and a local businessman in Aulander for many years.

Mahlon was a former member and deacon of Connaritsa Baptist Church and was presently a member of Aulander Baptist Church where he served on the finance and building and grounds committees.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Margaret Cobb Jernigan; a son, William Mahlon Jernigan and wife, Judy of Matthews, NC; a daughter, Cecelia Todd and husband, Tony of Aulander; grandchildren, Sue Ann Lester and husband, Ted of Suffolk, VA, Meredith Lee Griffith and husband, Heath of Thomasville, NC; two great-grandchildren, Bayleigh Griffith and Taylor Lester; a sister, Jane J. Baker and a brother, Joe R. Jernigan, both of Aulander; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mr.

Jernigan was preceded in death by his brother, George Dewey Jernigan, Jr.

A celebration of his life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends at the Jernigan residence, 307 Broad Street, Aulander, NC.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aulander Baptist Church, P.O.
