Louise Snell

HAMEL, VA n Louise Snell, 80, passed away quietly June 9, 2006 at a nursing facility in Leesburg, VA. She was the daughter of Lindsey T. and Rennie C. Snell of Creswell, NC.

She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn G. Bird and her husband Douglas of Round Hill, VA; one son, Stephen L. Hamel of Richmond, VA; and two grandchildren.

A native of Creswell, NC, Mrs. Hamel lived most of her life in the Richmond area as a resident of Goochland Co. She retired from the International Mission Board in 1991.

A memorial service will be held at Scuppernong Church of Christ, Creswell, NC on Saturday, June 17 at 2 p.m.

James Dickens

GASTON n James Elliott Dickens, 85, a native of Halifax County, died June 11, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids. He was the widower of Alberta Massengale Dickens.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, by the Rev. Grady C. Dickens and the Rev. Charles Myers. Burial was in Crestview Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Spring United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 443, Gaston, NC 27832.

Dickens was a member of Spring United Methodist Church and a retired farmer.

Survivors include his children, Vernon Elliott Dickens of Roanoke Rapids, Sue Owens and Tommie A. Dickens, both of Gaston, Rose Dickens Clements of Emporia, Va.; his sisters, Avis D. Williams and Hazel D. Hasty, both of Roanoke Rapids; his brothers, the Rev. Grady C. Dickens of Nashville and Allan Dickens of Gaston; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Brenda Sharpe

ROCKY MOUNT n Brenda Sharpe, 54, died June 9, 2006.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.

Irene Bedgood

CHESAPEAKE-Irene Johnson Bedgood, 67, formerly of Chesapeake, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2006 in a Greenville, NC hospital.

Mrs. Bedgood was the widow of Robert Bedgood. She was the US Postmaster of Cofield, NC with 33 years of US Postal Service.

She is survived by her mother, Bertha Johnson of Chesapeake, two daughters, Melanie Bedgood and son-in-law Steve Harris of Winton, NC, and Annette Bedgood of Winton, NC; a sister, Judy Davis of Chesapeake; a brother, Mike Johnson of Chesapeake; and a granddaughter, Olivia Harris of Winton, NC.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1PM on Friday at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. William Askew, Jr.

WOODLAND – Mr. William Linwood “Bill” Askew, Jr., age 78 died peacefully at his home in Woodland on Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

Bill was a native of Gates County, where he graduated from Gatesville High School.

He attended the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill and completed his education, graduating from Elon College.

He was married to Anne Grimes in 1950, and they had two wonderful children.

Bill worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Agricultural Investment Division for thirty five years retiring as a consultant. He was very interested in the economic growth of Northeastern North Carolina and served as the chairman of the Northampton County Economic Development Board.

Recently Bill was appointed chairman of the Northeastern North Carolina Regional Economic Development Commission, representing sixteen counties.

Bill and Anne are both members of the Woodland Baptist Church. He served in many capacities at the church. He was a choir member, deacon, and chairman of the Board of deacons on several occasions. Bill served on the board of the Pine Forest Rest Home in Potecasi. He was a member of the Woodland Men’s Club as well as being involved in many other civic organizations. Preceding him in death were his mother and father, Zoe Sawyer Askew and William Linwood Askew, Sr.

Survivors include his wife, Anne Grimes Askew of the home, one son, William Linwood “Lin” Askew, III and his wife Sally of Memphis, TN, one daughter, Laura Askew Wolfe and her husband Tom of Wake Forest, NC, one niece, Vicki Grimes of Wilson, NC and one nephew, John Grimes of Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Also surviving are five grandchildren: William L. “Will” Askew, IV, Charles Askew, Thomas Wolfe, Sawyer Wolfe and Anna Wolfe.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, June 15, 2006 at 2 P.M. at the Woodland Baptist Church in Woodland with the Rev. John Mathis and Rev. Heath Lloyd officiating.

The interment will follow at the Woodland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Anne and Bill, 1555 Eagletown Road, Woodland, NC.

Martha B. Daniels

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Martha Beatrice Daniels, 81, a former resident of Ahoskie and Colerain, died June 11, 2006 in her home. She was the widow of Luther Mitchell Daniels.

She was a member of Holy Angeles Catholic Church, Portsmouth, Va. and a homemaker.

Survivors include one sister, Yolanda Polo of Barranquilla, South America, and one brother, Heriberto Gonzalez, New York City, NY.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Hillcrest Cemetery, Colerain, by the Rev. Robert M. May. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie is in charge.

Mary Alice Rhodes

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Mary Alice Rhodes, 91, died June 9, 2006, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Ms. Rhodes retired from Planter’s Manufacturing Company in Portsmouth. S

Survivors include two daughters, Dorothy Mae Parker of Seaboard and Diane Rhodes Harrison of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Martha Cotton of Seaboard; and a brother, James H. Newsome of Portsmouth;

10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 26 great-great- grandchildren; and four great-great -great-grandchildren.

A life celebration service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at J.T. Fisher Funeral Services Chapel, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake, by Pastor Austin Goodwin. Margaret O. Revelle

RICH SQUARE – Mrs. Margaret Outland Revelle, age 98, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2006 at the Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley in Rich Square, NC.

She was born January 10, 1908 in Woodland, NC and was the daughter of the William F. and Elizabeth Brown Outland.

Preceding her in death is her husband, Marvin M. Revelle.

She was a graduate of Arnold College of New Haven, CT.

She was a homemaker and will be greatly missed by her family.

She loved to “go”, play bridge with friends, crochet, and play Dominoes with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Franklin Baptist Church in Franklin, VA.

For many years she was a volunteer at East Pavilion in Franklin, VA.

Survivors include, her two daughters; Connie Christison and her husband Ken of Conway, NC and Betsy Jackson and her husband Roy of Henderson, NC, one sister; Janie O. Sams of Thomasville, NC, four grandchildren; Gayle Gresham and husband John, Brian Christison and wife Anita, Mike Jackson and wife Linda and Chris Jackson and wife Emily.

Also surviving are seven great grandchildren; Kate and Kenny Gresham, Emi Christison, Ashleigh and Ricky Bradley, and Thomas and Spencer Jackson.

A funeral will be held Friday, June 16, 2006 at 2 P.M. at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church in Conway, NC with the interment following at the church cemetery.

Officiating will be the Rev. David Ross and Rev. Sharon James.

The family will receive friends at Bridgers Funeral Home, Conway, NC on Thursday evening from 7-8:30 P.M.

Dr. Twanna Dixon-Cherry

RAEFORD n Dr. Twanna Belinda-Cherry, MD, a native of Shannon, died June 7, 2006 at Johnston County Hospital, Smithfield.

A funeral was conducted June 11 at Cape Fear Conference “B” Headquarters by the Rev. James Emanuel, Radford. Burial was in Laurel Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Lumber Bridge. Bule Funeral Home, Raeford, was in charge. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, submitted information.

Dr. Cherry received her medical degree from East Carolina University, Greenville. She was employed at Meridan Medical Center, Smithfield. She was also employed with Agape Community Health Clinic, Washington and Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

Survivors include her husband, Cederic J. Cherry; her parents, Lee E. Dixon and Doris M. Dixon of Shannon; a brother, Lee Terrell Dixon of Shannon; a sister, Ashley Dixon and Shavonne Dixon, both of Greensboro; and her maternal grandparents, Harrison and Annie Dixon of Lumber Bridge.

Verlean C. Bowser

WOODLAND – Verlean Cumbo Bowser, 46, died June 12, 2006 at Halifax Memorial Hospital, Roanoke Rapids..

She was a member of Second Baptist Potecasi Church, Potecasi.

She was a certified nurse assistant.

Survivors include one son, Demetrius Cumbo of Ahoskie; two daughters, Tanekia Cumbo and Tomekia Cumbo, both of Roanoke Rapids;

her mother, Vergie Cumbo Deloatch of Woodland; one brother, Kenneth C. Cumbo of Woodland; one sister, Sandra McClough of Kannapolis; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Second Baptist Church Potecasi.

Burial will be in the Walden/Futrell cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Carolyn Joyner

AHOSKIE – Carolyn Joyner, 45, a native of Hertford County, died June 10, 2006.

She was a member of Newsome Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie.

Survivors include two sons, Tony E. Glenn, II of New Jersey and Antwan Glenn of Raleigh; her mother, Sarah Joyner of Ahoskie; one sister, Isabelle Roberson of Ahoskie;

six brothers, John Joyner, Jr. of Newark, James Joyner of Bloomington, Il., Willie Joyner, George Joyner, Willis “Woody B” Joyner and Tyrone Joyner, all of Ahoskie, NC;

and one grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Newsome Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie is charge.
