Bobby L. Smith

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Bobby L. Smith, 66, died May 27, 2006, at Maryview Medical Center.

Smith retired from Associated Naval Architect after 39 years of service as a welder.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Wilkins Smith of Portsmouth; son, Danny Smith of Portsmouth; four brothers, Frank Smith of Chesapeake, Richard &uot;Dick&uot; Smith of Suffolk, Leon Smith of Ripley, W.Va., and Raymond Smith of Ahoskie; and six sisters, Frances Rogers of Portsmouth, Ellen Hollowell of Edenton, Mary Smith of St. Mary’s, Ga., Betty Weth of St. Mary’s, Shirley Marshall of Edenton and Barbara Hendrick of Tyner.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Fairview Heights Baptist Church, 4704 Deep Creek Blvd., Portsmouth, VA 23702, by the Rev. Fred Williams. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bobby’s name to the Coastal Conservation Association, 2100 Marina Shores Drive, Suite 108, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.

Carrington E. “Shorty” Baker/B&gt

AULANDER n Carrington Earl “Shorty” Baker, 77, of the 600 block of Carroll St., died suddenly on Monday, May 29, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville, NC.

At the time of his death, he was surrounded by all members of his immediate family.

Mr. Baker, son of the late Maylon and Gladys Baker, was a native of Hertford County.

He graduated from Ahoskie High School and Wake Forest University and served in the

U. S. Marine Corps for two years.

“Shorty” was a farmer and a local businessman in Aulander for many years.

He was a former member of Connaritsa Baptist Church where he served in many roles and was presently a member of Aulander Baptist Church where he served as deacon and church clerk.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jane Jernigan Baker; daughters, Peggy Cayton and husband, Carl of Ahoskie, Holley Drew and husband, David of Aulander; a son Garry Baker and wife, Amy of Aulander; and grandchildren, Chad Cayton, Garrett Baker, Dustin Baker, Kristen Cayton, Bryan Drew and Brittany Drew.

Besides his parents, Mr. Baker was preceded in death by a brother, Maylon S. Baker, Jr.

A celebration of his life service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at Aulander Baptist Church.

The family received visitors at the Baker residence at 606 Carroll St., Aulander, NC.

George Jackson/B&gt

MURFREESBORO – George Jackson, 90, an avid fisherman, died May 30, 2006, in Ahoskie, NC.

Born October 6, 1915, in Suffolk, VA, he was the son of the late George and Effie Oliver Jackson and widower of Verlie Jackson.

Mr. Jackson was a steel worker with Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, MD, until he retired.

Survivors include his daughters, Delores “Dee” J. Whitley and husband, James E.,

Margaret J. Roland and husband Johnnie; granddaughter, Deanna Whitley Bissett all of Murfreesboro; grandson, Jim Whitley and wife Jane of Danville, VA; great grandchildren, Adam James Bissett, Eric Christian Bissett, Kacie Pierce Whitley; nephews, Bobby Jackson and wife Mary of Maryland; Pebbie O. Piland of Virginia Beach and Jim Dennis of Portsmouth; niece Dottie Ann Knoerlein and husband Bill of Maryland.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suffolk, VA, by the Rev. Jeffrey Skiles. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home, Suffolk,

is serving the family.

ROCKY MOUNT n Herbert Williams, 90, died May 28, 2006 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

PENDLETON n Jean Hoell Armstrong, 71, a native of Rocky Mount, died May 29, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Galatia Baptist Church by the Rev. David Foster, the Rev. James Hester, the Rev. Lawrence Evans and the Rev. Tim Hogan. Burial will be in Severn Cemetery, Severn. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Armstrong worked for many years with NC Farm Bureau in Jackson.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Lonnie Armstrong; a daughter, Marty Woodard of Severn; a son, Dan Armstrong of Spring Hope; a sister, Anna Mae “Sister” Coley of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

MERRY HILL n Burnett Williams, 93, died May 28, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Peterson Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. A visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

CONWAY – Ronald “Rhalo” Flythe, 70, a native of Northampton County, died May 29, 2006 in Conway.

Flythe was retired from Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board as a manager.

He was a member of First Baptist Church Conway.

Survivors include his wife, Macie R. Flythe of Conway;

one son, Gregory Flythe of Middle River, MD;

one daughter, Pamela F. Gordon of Charlotte; three brothers, Woodrow Flythe and Elois Flythe, both of Conway and Claud Flythe of Raleigh;

two sisters, Vivian Flythe-Hunter and Lorraine Baker of Conway; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by Rev. Bobby Warren.

Cremation will follow services.

Alice Watford/B&gt

COLERAIN n Alice Faye Watford, formally of Colerain, died May 28, 2006.

Survivors include four sister, Janice Watford, Susie Jones, Barbara Askew and Essie Davis; and two brothers, Melvin and Thurman Watford.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Colerain.

Burial will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc.,

Ahoskie, is in charge.

William Taylor Jr./B&gt

MERRY HILL n William Harry Taylor Jr., 85, died May 30, 2006 at his home. He was the widower of Amelia Cale Lawrence Taylor and Edna Leggett Taylor.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Capehart’s Baptist Cemetery by the Rev. Bruce Dayton. The family will receive friends from the home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to University Hospital Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Taylor was a member and deacon of Capehart’s Baptist Church and served during WWII in the Army Air Force. Before this retirement, he was the owner of W.H. Taylor’s General Merchandise in Merry Hill.

Survivors include two sons, Henry Taylor of Jacksonville and Delbert Taylor of Merry Hill; two sisters, Nora of Williamston and Norma White of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren.

PHILADELPIA, Pa. n Lorraine Askew Jones, died May 25, 2005 at Albert Einstein Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Anne Joyner of Cleveland, Ohio.
