Memorial Day events planned

Two local counties will honor Memorial Day on Monday.

Both Hertford County and Northampton County will hold their annual celebrations to honor those who lost their lives in service to their country.

In Jackson, the service will begin at 11 a.m. and will be held in the Courthouse Square.

Retired Veteran Services Officer Chuck Youse will be the guest speaker for the event while Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent will give the invocation and benediction.

Together, the two veterans will lay the wreath in memory of those from Northampton County who died while serving in the armed forces.

Northampton County High School n East JROTC will provide both the Color Guard and the Honor Guard. The group will also be responsible for the playing of ‘Taps.’

“We want to honor America’s war veterans, especially the ones who gave their life for their country,” Veteran Services Officer John Byrum said.

Meanwhile, 30 minutes later, Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 will begin their annual services at No Man’s Land park on Main Street.

The service will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will feature United States Army Major (Retired) Wallace White as the guest speaker.

Taps will be provided by Reggie Faust.

“Please plan on attending this ceremony to honor all military members past and present that paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” said Richard L. Grimes, Commander of Post 102.
