John Edgar Luke

SUFFOLK, Va. – John &uot;Luke&uot; Edgar Luke, 50, a native of Florida, died May 12, 2006. Luke was employed with Northrop Grumman in the Quality Inspector Department then moved to Jordan Farms in Corapeake.

Survivors include wife, Linda Marie Luke; one child, daughter, Cortnie Marie Artis; one granddaughter; and four sisters, Judy Byerly of Virginia Beach, Jeanne Ward of Fredericksburg, Jacqui Reitch of Virginia Beach and Josee Carroll of Chesapeake.

A memorial service was Friday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, by the Rev. Rob Pittman. Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Hubert W. Hill

AULANDER – Hubert Winston Hill 89, of the 100 block of J. T. Hall Rd., died at the home of his daughter May 18, 2006.

He was a native of Bertie County, a son of the late William H. and Emma Hill Hill, a member of First Presbyterian Church, Ahoskie, an Army Veteran of WWII, a retired Roofer, and was predeceased by his wife Lucille Godwin Hill.

Surviving is one daughter: Becky H. Hall and husband G.C., Aulander, N.C. One sister: Elizabeth Robbins, Ahoskie, N.C., One brother; Arba Hill, Suffolk, Va., one grandson; Gregory C. Hall and wife Dorothy, Aulander, N.C., two great-granddaughters; Brittney Hall, and Audrey Hall, Ahoskie, N.C., two step-great grandchildren; Bri-Anna Matthews, and Justin Matthews, Colerain, N.C.

A Graveside Funeral Service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 20, 2006 at Ahoskie Cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Rice officiating. Burial will follow with Military Rites at the Cemetery.

Joseph Garner

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Joseph Garner, 52, died May 18, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Janett F. Williams

NORFOLK, Va. – Janett F. “Janie” Williams, a native of Bertie County, died May 14, 2006. She was the widow of Bishop D. Lawrence Williams.

Mrs. Williams graduated from Elizabeth City State. She was employed with the Naval Supply Center.

Survivors include nine stepchildren, Robert, William Dove, Davie and Joseph, Lenora, Jessie, Helen, Gloria, Ruth; a sister, Mildred Flood Outlaw of Ahoskie; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A homegoing celebration will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mason Memorial Church, 744 Goff St., Norfolk. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Riddick Funeral Service is in charge.

Tashina Harvey

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Tashina Harvey, 13, died May 16, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Littleton, by the Rev. Carter. Interment will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids.

Johnnie M. Fornes

AHOSKIE – Johnnie Mayhue Fornes, 79, of the 100 Block of Liverman Mill Rd., died May 18, 2006 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie Nursing Home.

He was a native of Vanceboro, N.C., the son of the late Johnnie Franklin and Annie Lewis Fornes, a Navy Veteran of WW II, a member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie, and a retired Auto Body Mechanic.

Besides his parents, Mr. Fornes was predeceased by his first wife, Elizabeth Congleton Fornes, his second wife, Ada White Fornes, a brother, Curtis Fornes, and a stepdaughter, Glenda Byrd.

Surviving are one daughter; Linda Fornes Chitty and husband, Glenn, Goldsboro, N.C. one son; Tony Fornes and wife Carolyn P., Aulander, N.C., one stepdaughter; Sharon Roope and husband Kenny, Ahoskie, N.C., two sisters; Fannie Edwards, Swansboro, N.C., Katie Chandler, Vanceboro, N.C, one brother; James Fornes, Live Oak, Fl., four grandchildren; Sheree Chitty Moeller and husband J.C., Scott Chitty and wife Dana G., Jason Fornes and wife Dawn, Megan Fornes and husband Craig Terry, six great grandchildren; Brandon Fornes, Jack Austin Moeller, Jordan Fornes, Wyatt Moeller, Stella Moeller, and Matthew Terry.

A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2006 at Ahoskie Cemetery, with the Rev. Billy Presley officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday prior to services.

Stanley Harris

SEVERN n Stanley Maurice Harris, 75, a native of Northampton County, died May 18, 2006 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 am. Saturday at Severn Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Hogan. Burial will be in Severn Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Severn Baptist Church, Severn, NC or University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Harris was retired from Hercules Incorporated, Franklin, Va., and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Severn Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Ann Moore Harris; his daughters, Pat Jones and Jane Marie Davis, both of Jackson; a stepdaughter, Robin Tudor of Emporia; a stepson, Eddie Moore of Severn; a sister, Janet Harris Outland of Rich Square; seven grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Ledell Davis

AHOSKIE n Ledell Davis, 79, a native of Bertie County, died May 18, 2006 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Davis was a retired janitor at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. He was a deacon at Zion Hill Baptist Church and a member of the male choir and senior mass choir.

Survivors include his wife, Naomi Speller Davis of Ahoskie; daughters, Maxine Davis of Murfreesboro, Cynthia Davis Martin of Snow Hill and Monique Soloman of Philadelphia, Pa.; brothers, Randolph Davis of Windsor and Walter Davis of Philadelphia; sisters, Velma Davis and Louise Privott, both of Philadelphia and Vasti White of York, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Fennell Sr.

AHOSKIE n Stanley McCoy Fennell Sr., 63, a native of Hertford County, died May 17, 2006 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Second Baptist Union Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Milton E. Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Fennell was a former employee of Newport News Shipbuilding and Easco Alumnium Company. He was a member of Second Baptist Union Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Louise Sharp of Winton; sons, Kenneth Jerome Fennell of Oxon Hill, Md., and Stanley McCoy Fennell of Richmond; daughters, Phyllis Katrina Fennell of Ahoskie, Trenda Fennell-Britt of Richmond and Brenda Fennell-Adams, also of Richmond; brothers, William Fennell of Hampton and Charlie Fennell of Newport News; sisters, Sallie Vann of Portsmouth and Louise Melton of Hampton; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Forrest D. Williams

EURE – Forrest Duvall &uot;Willy&uot; Williams, 70, a native of Washington, DC, died May 18, 2006, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Williams first serving in the Navy Reserves and later for 26 years in the U.S. Navy, he was a firefighter and member of the crash crew and saw action during two tours of duty to Vietnam on the USS America.

Survivors include his wife, Joan LeHouillier Williams; two sons, Michael Williams of Windsor, Va., and David Williams of Eure; a sister, Beverly Williams of Gainesville, Fla.; a brother, Douglas Williams of Atlanta; and grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. William Hawkins. Private interment will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Cecil L. Duke

SUFFOLK, Va. – Cecil Lee Duke, 67, a native of Newport News, died May 17, 2006, in the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.

Duke established his own company, Duke Bookkeeping Service. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, where he sang in the Chancel Choir, served on the Finance Committee and as a church teller.

Survivors include his wife, Sally Robeson Davidson Duke; stepdaughter, Lovie D. Barnhill of Sunbury; stepson, Dave Davidson of Suffolk; brother, Raymond H. Duke of Newport News; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker & Co.
