WINDSOR – For the first time in her young political career, District 6B Attorney Valerie Mitchell-Asbell faced an election day challenger.

She faired rather well.

In a hotly-contested race for the District Attorney’s seat, Mitchell-Asbell made it look easy as she swept all three counties (Bertie, Hertford, Northampton) en route to defeating Murfreesboro lawyer Don Carter.

Unofficial results from Tuesday’s Democratic Primary show Mitchell-Asbell’s name appearing on 6,723 ballots for 64.8 percent of the vote. Carter tallied 3,651 votes.

“It is an honor to be re-elected as your District Attorney,” Asbell said. “I would like to thank all my friends and supporters for their untiring efforts during the campaign and for their votes at the polls.

I am pleased that the citizens in this District have the confidence in me and my staff to allow us to continue to serve and protect this community.”

She continued, “I would also like to thank my family and my staff for their support before and throughout this campaign.

I will continue to have an open door policy and be accessible to the public.

I look forward to serving all of the citizens of Bertie, Hertford and Northampton counties for the next four years.”

Her far-reaching popularity among the district’s voters was evident in the breakdown of each precinct. Of the 43 total precincts in District 6B, Mitchell-Asbell was the candidate of choice in 36.

Mitchell-Asbell carried all but one of Northampton County’s 17 precincts (Carter held a 210-84 edge in the Lake Gaston voting area). The brunt of her Northampton support came in the Gaston, Garysburg, Rich Square, Seaboard and Conway precincts where she collected 1,427 of the 2,756 votes cast for her in the county.

Carter was named on 1,334 Northampton ballots.

In Bertie County, Mitchell-Asbell was the favorite in 10 of the 12 precincts en route to totaling 2,459 votes compared to 1,211 for Carter. The lion’s share of her Bertie support came in the Windsor I and II precincts where Mitchell-Asbell held a 744-279 edge. Other Bertie precincts that favored Mitchell-Asbell by more than 100 votes were Colerain II (215-106) and White’s (171-49).

Carter’s lone precinct victories in Bertie were at Indian Woods (82-18) and Snakebite (126-99).

Riding a wave of support in the three Ahoskie precincts (a combined 528-295 edge over her opponent), Mitchell-Asbell completed her District 6B sweep by collecting 1,508 votes in Hertford County, winning nine of its 13 voting districts.

Carter n who won the Ahoskie III, Bryantville, Cofield and Murfreesboro II precincts n was named on 1,106 ballots in the county.

However, he failed to win his home district outright as Mitchell-Asbell came out on top by a 327-225 combined count in the Murfreesboro I and II precincts.

Mitchell-Asbell advances to November’s General Election where she faces no Republican opposition.
