Cecil J. Barnes

SEABOARD — Cecil James Barnes, 99, a native of Northampton County, died April 13, 2006, in Jacksonville, Fla. He was the widower of Daisy Crowder Barnes.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Galatia Bap-tist Church the Rev. David Foster. Burial will be in the Barnes family cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Kidney Foundation. Massey Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Survivors include a daughter, Dean Smith of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild

Ivan V. Bunch

HOBBSVILLE – Ivan Vernon Bunch, 85, a native of Chowan County, died April 16, 2006, in Britthaven of Edenton.

Mr. Bunch retired as an agent with Jefferson-Pilot Life Insurance Company, he had also farmed and with his wife owned and operated Bunch’s Greenhouse and Nursery. He was a member of Warwick Baptist Church, and had served aboard the USS Alabama with the Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Lane Bunch; three daughters, Annette Scarborough of Wilmington, Del., Janette Jackson of Appomattox, Va., and Phyllis Thompson of Atlanta, Ga.; a son, Don Bunch of Elizabeth City; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Warwick Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Charles Jones. Burial will be in the Bunch family cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Waverly S. Rountree

EURE – Waverly Staley Rountree, 83, a native of Gates County, died April 15, 2006, in his home. He was the widower of Myrtie Williams Rountree.

Rountree was a farmer, he had retired from the landscape division of the North Carolina Department of Transportation. A member of Eure Christian Church, the Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126 and the Sudan Temple of the Shrine, he had served in the Army during World War II and saw action in the Pacific Theater where he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Survivors include two daughters, Cleo Craddock and Diane Hendrix; two sons, Leon Rountree and Ray Rountree, both of Eure; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Kiker and the Rev. Gilbert Crawford. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eure Volunteer Fire Dept., in care of Thomas Powell, 169 Powell Road, Eure, NC 27935.

Joseph K. Burke

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Joseph Kermit Burke, a native of Gates County, died April 12, 2006, in Chesapeake Health Care Center.

Survivors include his wife, Julia Dye Burke of Chesapeake; a daughter, Malva Freeman of Chesapeake; two sons, Kermit Burke of Chesapeake and James Burke, both of Oakland, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Robert L. Happer. Fitchett Funeral Home, Chesapeake, was in charge.

Marie Newell

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Marie Newell, 55, died April 13, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Oliver A. Hobbs

GATESVILLE n Oliver Arthur Hobbs, 70, a native of Gates County, died April 13, 2006 at his home.

A celebration of life service was conducted Monday at Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake, by Pastor Dr. Claude Odom. Interment was in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge.

Hobbs retired from Gwaltney Company, Smith, Va., after 30 years of service. He was a member of Jephthah Masonic Lodge #174. He was also a member of Blanchard Grove Baptist Church, Hobbsville.

Survivors include his wife, Alice Hathaway Hobbs of the home; three daughters, Delphine Taylor of Gatesville, Marian Riddick of Sunbury and Shelia Savage of Gates; five sons, Arthur Hobbs and Shelley Hobbs, both of Sunbury, Danny Hobbs and Alvin Hobbs, both Suffolk and Dennis Hobbs of the home; four sisters, Vivian Harris of Sunbury, Myrtle Eure of Suffolk, Savannah McIntosh and Cherry Brinkley, both of Waterbury, CT; three brothers, Thurman Hobbs of Gates, James Hobbs of Waterbury and the Rev. Dr. Robert Hobbs of Suffolk; and 15 grandchildren.

Rose Hollowell

ELIZABETH CITY n Rose Alene Harrell Hollowell, 58, a native of Chowan County, died April 15, 2006 at Albemarle Hospital.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Edenton Church of God by the Rev. Donald Sawyer. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to the family to help defray memorial and funeral expenses.

Mrs. Hollowell was a homemaker, and had formerly been employed with Seabrook Blanching Corp. She was a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church and had attended Edenton Church of God.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary E. Hollowell Briggs and Brenda H. Sadler, a son; Richard Earl “Buddy” Hollowell Jr., all of Elizabeth City; her mother, Eula Copeland Harrell of Tyner; three brothers, Herb, Terry and Jerry Harrell, all of Tyner; and a grandson.

Lucille Gatling

EURE n Lucille Mattie Walker Gatling, 74, died April 14, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, by the Rev. Alton Edwards. Burial will be in the Boone-Darden family cemetery, Eure. A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors include her husband, Willie Clarence Gatling; one foster son, Joseph Rae Darden of Clarksville, TN; three sisters, Mandy Dancy of Brooklyn, NY, Myrtle Lee Burden of Aulander and Lorraine Boone of Portsmouth, Va.; and one brother, Walter Anderson of Portsmouth.

Edgar Warren Jr.

SOMERSET, NJ n Edgar Ellis Warren Jr., a native of Conway, died April 7, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at First Baptist Church, Conway, by Pastor Mark A. Barfield and the Rev. Bobby L. Warren. Perkins Funeral Home, Bethel, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Carrie Little Warren; a daughter, Tammi Little, both of Somerset; two brothers, Cecil Warren of Suitland, MD and Bobby L. Warren of Conway; and three sisters, Phyllis M. Miller of Newark, Debra W. Joyner of Conway and Patricia W. Harris of Jackson.

Margaret P. Doughtie

RICH SQUARE – Margaret Parsons Doughtie,

91, a native of Dallas, TX, and formerly of Ahoskie, died April 17, 2006 at Autumn Care of Roanoke Valley. She was the widow of Floyd Doughtie.

Mrs. Doughtie a member of Aulander Baptist Church, and a former employee of Minton’s Cleaners.

Survivors include a daugther, Judy Brown, Kelford; one son, James William English, Jr. of West Germany; two sisters: Martha Burnette, Denver City, TX., and Ruth Moody of Corpus Christi; one brother, Robert Parsons of Arteia, N.M.; and a granddaughter.

A memorial services will be held at a later date. Garrett Funeral Home , is in charge.

Mary McNally

WILLIAMSTON n Mary Murawska McNally, 90, a native Jersey City, NJ, died April 15, 2006 at Three Rivers Nursing Home, Windsor. She was the widow of Peter Joseph McNally Jr.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at Graceland Memorial Park, Kenlworth, NJ. Walker Funeral Home, Williamston, is in charge.

Mrs. McNally was a retired factory worker and a homemaker. She also attended St. Joseph the Carpenter Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son, James McNally; and three grandchildren.

Wilbert Hayes

ROCKY MOUNT n Wilbert L. Hayes, died April 17, 2006 at Heritage Retirement Center, Rocky Mount.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount, is in charge.
