Cora Chavis

AHOSKIE – Cora Chavis, 94, died April 10, 2006 at Winslow Nursing Home, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Chavis was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, Ahoskie.

Survivors include one son, Melvin Chavis of Ahoskie; two daughters, Margaret Harris of Elizabeth City and Linda Johnson of Atlanta, GA; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by Rev. Robert Ashe.

Interment will be in church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie.

Joe F. Draper

CONWAY n Joe Frank Draper, 86, died Thursday, April 13, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Center in Fayetteville. He had been preceded in death by his parents, Charlie B. and Clyde M. Draper.

A native of Northampton County, he owned and operated Conway Hardware for 41 years. He was a charter member of the Conway Volunteer Fire Department and served as Fire Chief for 17 years. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps’s 417th Night Fighter Squadron for over three years, a service he was very proud to have given. Also, he was a member of Conway United Methodist Church and, as a hobby, enjoyed working with wood in his shop.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Eloise C. Draper of their home; two children, David C. Draper and his wife, Linda of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Joan D. Yalch and her husband, Bill of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Candice Bowman, Ginger Berrier and Kim Wall.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Conway United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lindsey Green. Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

The family received friends at their home, Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc., in Conway, is in charge of arrangements.

Kirk G. Jordan

ROCKY MOUNT n Kirk Gerard Jordan, 66, died April 10, 2006 at Life Care Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Mamie Boone

MURFREESBORO n Mamie Boone, 79, a native of Hertford County, died April 12, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Hubert Grant.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Nebo Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Dr. Robert Holloman. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Mrs. Boone was a retired from Georgia-Pacific Lumber Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro.

Survivors include her daughters, Mary Alice Brockington of Baltimore, MD, Joyce Ann Boone of Murfreesboro, Clara Lee Stephenson of Murfreesboro and Lois Romez of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Marie Garris of New York, NY, and Alice Brown of Portsmouth; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Marie Newell, 55, died April 13, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.
