Mikayla S. Nowell

RALEIGH n Mikayla Simone Nowell, 3, died April 7, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Baptist Grove Church, Raleigh. Preceding the service at 10 a.m. there will be a public viewing. Burial will be in Blanchard Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Hobbsville. Lea Funeral Home Service, Raleigh and Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Nicole McLeod Nowell; grandparents, Marion and Patricia McLeod of Richmond, Va., and Whalyn and Fannie Jordan of Gatesville; grandmothers, Betty Jones of Edenton and Alice Gatling of Sunbury; and great-grandmother, Ernestine Mobley of Richmond.

Frank Williams

ROXOBEL n Frank Williams, 54, a native of Northampton County, died April 10, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. Clarence Myrick. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Williams was a farm worker with J.G. Baker, past employment with Harrington and Gregory Manufacturing Companies. He was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church, Rich Square.

Survivors include his children, Frankie Richardson and Antonio Richardson, both of Woodland; his mother, Janie Peebles of Rich Square; brothers, David Williams, Irvin Peebles and Alvin Peebles, all of Jacksonville, and Larry Jacobs of Rich Square; sisters, Alice Jordan of Hampton, Va.; and Linda Rankins of Newport News; and six grandchildren.

Willia B. Hunt

WINDSOR n Willia B. Hunt, 97, died April 6, 2006 at Plumblee Nursing Home, Plymouth. She was the widow of Eugene Hunt.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery. Cherry’s Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge

Mrs. Hunt was a retired teacher, High School Guidance Counselor, Civic, Religious and Social worker for the community, county and state level. She was also a member of Cedar Landing Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as the clerk, trustee, deaconess and civic member.

Survivors include two sons, Elder Ernest C. Dawson of Ft. Washington, MD and Thomas C. Dawson of Williamston; and five grandchildren.

Dorothy L. James

DOT JAMES, 87, of Charlotte, formerly of Conway, died peacefully, Tuesday, April 11, at CMC-Pineville in Pineville, NC. Born on 9-16-18, Miss Dot was the daughter of the late Retha and John Herbert Lassiter. She lived for 78 years in Conway. Her beloved husband, Edward, deceased in 1975 and her son, Eddie deceased in 1968, were greatly missed by her. It is for sure they are united now in the presence of a loving God.

Mrs. James is survived by two daughters, Rose Francis and husband, Joe of Chattanooga, TN and Sue Barnes of Charlotte, as well as five grandchildren who are as follows; Joe Francis of Costa Rica, Sam Francis and his wife, Amy of Chattanooga, TN, Jon Barnes and his wife, Dawn, of East London, South Africa, Jenny Hucks and husband, Travis of Buford, GA and Sarah Barnes of Charlotte. “Ma-Ma,” also, leaves behind two great-grandchildren, Khaya and Alyson Barnes of East London, South Africa; a sister, Bruce Barnes of Raleigh; and a brother, Sam Lassiter of Woodland survive Mrs. James as well.

A graveside service celebrating the life of Miss Dot will be held on Friday, April 14 at 11 a.m. in the Town of Conway Cemetery. She had been an active member of Conway Baptist Church for many years.

The family would, especially, like to thank the staff and caregivers of Suzanne’s Cottage at Charlotte Square for their loving and kind care of Mrs. James during her stay there.

Bridgers Funeral Home, Inc. in Conway is assisting the family, who will receive guests there on the evening of April 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. It is requested that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Conway Baptist Church.

James Battle Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT n James Battle Jr., 79, died April 5, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

Major Johnson

BOSTON, Mass. n Major Johnson, 98, a native of Tarboro, died April 10, 2006 at Beth Israel Deaconess Md. Center-East.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton, by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro.

He is survived by one son, Leroy Brown Johnson of Charleston, S.C.

Alonza R. Cross

GATES n Alonza Riddick Cross, 76, a native of Gates County, died April 10, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, by the Rev. Jerry Boone Jr. Burial will be in the Cross family Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel. The family will receive friends at the home of the deceased.

Survivors include two daughters, Retta Cross of Ft. Washington, Md., and Brenda C. Parker of Gates; three sons, Clinton Cross of Portsmouth, Va., Arnold Riddick and Javon Cross of Gates; two sisters, Madge Porter and Mildred Porter, both of Gates; two brothers, Lawrence Cross of Roduco and Floyd Cross of Gates; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
