Slate set for Tuesday

Tuesday is the day.

Voters in the Roanoke-Chowan area will go to the polls to choose district and county races.

The top race on the Democratic ballot in the three counties will be the race for Judicial District 6B Attorney. Incumbent Valerie Mitchell-Asbell will be on the ballot seeking her second full term. Attorney Don Carter is challenging her.

Also facing a challenge Tuesday will be District 27 House of Representatives incumbent Michael H. Wray. He is being challenged for the Democratic nomination by Northampton County resident Howard Ervin along with Vance County’s Anthony Butler.

State Senator Robert L. Holloman (D-4th) and Representative Howard Hunter Jr. (D-5th) both face opposition in November, but are uncontested in the Tuesday primary.

Bertie County

Sheriff – Incumbent Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins is being challenged by two newcomers. The two-term sheriff will face former Bertie Sheriff’s Detective Eddie Graham and Aulander resident S. Daryl Brockington.

Commissioner (District 5) – Three-term incumbent Bertie County Commissioner J. Jasper Bazemore will face opposition in the Democratic primary from newcomer Robert Brown Jr.

Board of Education (District 3) – Two newcomers to the school board race will vie to replace the retiring Seaton Fairless. Educator Michael Bracy will face off against political pundit Dean Stephens for the seat held by the current school board chairman.

Board of Education (District 4) – Incumbent school board member, the Rev. Gary Cordon, will be challenged in Tuesday’s election. Alton H. Parker of Roxobel has filed to seek the post.

Those who will not be on next week’s ballot due to not having primary opposition includes District 2 County Commissioner Rick Harrell, District 3 County Commissioner J. Wallace Perry, Clerk of Superior Court John C.P. Tyler and Board of Education member for District 2 Ricky Freeman.

Hertford County

Commissioner (District 1) – Incumbent Hertford County Commissioner Johnnie Ray Farmer will be challenged by Carl White in Tuesday’s primary.

Commissioner (District 2) – Commission Chairman Curtis A. Freeman will meet a challenge from former health department official William &uot;Bill&uot; Burgess.

Those who advanced to November’s general election because of no primary opposition included Sheriff Juan Vaughan (D) and Clerk of Superior Court Shirley Johnson (D).

Northampton County

Sheriff – Two-term incumbent Northampton County Sheriff Wardie Vincent will be opposed by his former Chief Deputy, Sheldon Skinner, in the May 2 primary.

Board of Education (3 seats) – A total of seven candidates are seeking three open seats on the Northampton County Board of Education.

All three incumbents have filed for the seat. They are Grace Edwards, Lafayette &uot;Lott&uot; Majette and Charles Tyner.

The challengers for the seats will be Don Johnson, Erica Smith-Hicks, Julius O. Webb and Clinton Williams.

There is no opposition for any candidates for Northampton County Commissioner in Tuesday’s primary. The Democratic candidates who will advance to November’s general election include county commissioner candidates Chester Deloatch Sr. (3rd), Robert V. Carter (4th) and Fannie P. Greene (5th). One Republican also will be on the ballot in November as Rose Sumner will seek the District 3 seat. Unaffiliated candidate Charles Youse will seek the District 5 seat providing he files by petition and is certified prior to June 30.

Also unopposed will be Clerk of Superior Court V. Michelle Spruill (D). She will also not appear on Tuesday’s ballot.

Gates County

Commissioner (District 1) – Incumbent David R. Brown will be challenged by Charles Sherwood Eason.

Commissioner (District 2) – Incumbent William H. Harrell is facing the challenge of Wade Howell Askew.

Commissioner (District 3) – Incumbent Marsha Faulk Langston will meet the challenge of Kenneth Jernigan.

Board of Education (District 5) – The current incumbent, Leslie S. Byrum, will meet a challenge from Paul Toti.

District Court Judge

(District 1) – Three people are vying for the position of District Court Judge Eula E. Reid, Van H. Johnson and John J. Flora III.

Also on the ballot will be District 1 Board of Education member G. Douglas Lilley and District 2 member Glendale P. Boone. They are both unopposed.

Polls open in all four counties at 6:30 a.m. and remain open to 7:30 p.m.
