WINDSOR – Want evidence Bertie is getting better?

The Lady Falcon softball team gave it Tuesday afternoon when they walloped Pasquotank County High School 11-0 in their second meeting of the season.

That came after edging the Lady Panthers 4-0 in their first meeting.

&uot;This one means a lot because if we keep winning and Currituck loses, we can get to the state playoffs,&uot; catcher Carla Cooper said. &uot;We’ve got to keep winning.&uot;

Winning came pretty easy to the Lady Falcons Tuesday afternoon as they plated eight runs in the second stanza to secure a huge early lead from which they never looked back.

Leading the way offensively was freshman Courtney Dunlow, who was 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Junior Megan Cowan was 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored while Christie Brown and Abby Parker each were 1-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

Holly Cowan and Allyson Hoggard were each 1-for-2 with a run scored. Cooper was 1-for-3.

While the Falcon bats were smoking, so was Cowan, who cruised through five innings on the mound. She surrendered just two hits with no runs and struck out six while walking none.

&uot;Her pitches were on time today,&uot; Cooper said of Cowan. &uot;She was pitching them in left and right. They were nasty.&uot;

Cowan credited the entire team for the victory.

&uot;We’re playing as a team,&uot; Cowan said after the game. &uot;There is so much communication out there. We’re getting strong as a team.&uot;

Falcon skipper Jackie Copeland said she felt her team was getting better as the year progressed.

&uot;We’re very much improved as a team,&uot; she said. &uot;Our hitting is coming around the way it should be.

&uot;We’re still not on top of the mountain, like coach (Alan) Hoggard says,&uot; Copeland added, &uot;but we’re close as far as our hitting.&uot;

The coach said she was pleased to see Hoggard’s hitting effort on the day and that it came from a lot of hard work in practice.

&uot;The one thing I’m most pleased about is I don’t have to tell them to hustle,&uot; Copeland closed. &uot;They hustle after every ball whether we’re winning or losing.&uot;

The Lady Falcons improved to 14-3-1 overall with the victory and stand 7-2 inside the Northeastern Coastal Conference. They will play at First Flight Friday afternoon at 4:30.
