WINDSOR – Don’t wait; start saving today.

Bertie County continues to offer a Prescription Drug Discount Card that can be used by all residents, regardless of financial status.

Recently, the Bertie County Board of Commissioners approved the cards, ones offering an average savings of 20 percent off the retail price in an effort to help individuals and families cope with the high price of prescription drugs.

The county is making these drug discount cards available free of charge under a program sponsored by the National Association of Counties (NACo). They are available at the Bertie County Manager’s Office, Bertie County Department of Social Services, Bertie County Council on Aging and the Bertie County Health Department.

The cards may be used by all county residents, regardless of age, income or existing health coverage and are accepted at many of the county’s pharmacies. A national network of more than 57,000 participating retail pharmacies also honor the NACo prescription discount card.

According to Rick Harrell, Chairman of the Bertie Board of Commissioners, the cards offer significant savings for the uninsured and underinsured residents of the county.

“Even those fortunate to have prescription coverage can use the card to save money on drugs that are not covered by their health plan,” Harrell said. “Residents do not have to be Medicare beneficiaries to be eligible for this program.”

Norman Cherry Sr., Vice-Chairman of the Bertie Commissioners, said the cards are very user-friendly.

“Simply present it at a participating pharmacy,” Cherry noted. “There is no enrollment form, no membership fee and no restrictions or limits on frequency of use. Cardholders and their family members may use the card any time their prescriptions are not covered by insurance.”

County residents can call toll free 1-877-321-2652 for assistance with the program.

The discount card program is administered by Caremark Rx, Inc.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) is a full-service organization that provides legislative, research, technical and public affairs assistance to county governments. Created in 1935, NACo continues to ensure that the nation’s 3,066 counties are heard and understood in the White House and Congress.
