WOODLAND – One of the fun events in the Roanoke-Chowan area is coming soon.

The Woodland Men’s Club, with the help of the Ladies Auxiliary, will sponsor the 44th annual Horse and Pony Show April 30.

The event is for the entire family and features children six years old or under participating in their first class of the show as they gallop and trot around the ring on their stick horses vying for a ribbon.

The annual show is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30 at the Billy Jenkins Ring outside of George. There are 40 classes scheduled for the day.

This year’s show will also feature Miniature Horses shown in hand (bridle) as well as driving.

Other classes will be the Lead Line for children seven and under and the Trail Class open to the English and Western horses.

Also, for those who enjoy a fast pace, there will be pole bending and barrel racing competitions which are timed events.

Other features of the show will include Ladies Go-As-You-Please Pleasure Horse which is open to any breed and ladies of any ages. Horses are to be shown with Western or English tack. Horses walk and do their favorite pleasure gait both ways of the ring and will be judged on manners, performance and suitability of the rider.

Also there will be Academy Class Open for riders of any age. The horses are to be shown at a flat walk, trot and canter both ways of the ring. The class is for riding lesson students.

Admission to the show is $1. There will be food including homemade cakes, pies, cookies, snacks, hot dogs, hamburgers and barbecue.

Those wishing to attend the show are encouraged to bring a chair or spread a blanket for their family to enjoy an afternoon of equine entertainment, fellowship and good food among neighbors and friends.
