Many of the student-athletes from the Roanoke-Chowan area have gone on to find success elsewhere.

More than a handful of athletes who played in Bertie, Gates, Hertford and Northampton counties are currently playing at institutions throughout the eastern United States.

Many of those athletes are freshmen who are competing on the intercollegiate level for the first time. Two, however, are veterans of college warfare.

Brian Burton

Brian Burton, a junior at Guilford College, graduated from Hertford County High School.

He is in his third season playing baseball for the Quakers and earned letters in both his freshman and sophomore seasons.

This year Burton has participated in nine games for Guilford, five of which he was in the starting lineup.

He is hitting at a .263 clip (5-of-19) and has a slugging percentage of .421. During those at-bats, he has recorded three RBIs and three triples.

Burton is a four-time member of Guilford’s Student-Athlete Honor Roll.

At HCHS, Burton lettered in baseball, football and golf.

Adam Baldwin

After one year of pitching at Pitt Community College, Adam Baldwin returned home to tool his trade for Chowan University in his hometown of Murfreesboro.

At Chowan, Baldwin has served as a starting pitcher and is one of the Braves’ promising young arms.

He is 1-4 on the current season and has started eight games, pitching a total of 32.1 innings.

During his time on the mound, Baldwin has 14 strikeouts and has only thrown two wild pitches.

His biggest game this season was a six-inning day against Virginia State in which the Braves took a 4-2 victory. Baldwin scattered seven hits and allowed only two runs in the contest.

Baldwin pitched at Hertford County High School and then signed with Pitt Community College when former Bears’ skipper Brandon Hodges was serving as an assistant coach at the school.

Catherine Outten

A two-time state champion at Lawrence Academy, Catherine Outten is continuing to play softball at University of the South (Sewanee).

During her freshman season for the Tigers, Outten has started all 18 games is sixth on the team in hitting with her .256 average. She is 11-for-43 on the year and has five RBIs.

Outten’s .929 fielding percent is second for the Lady Tigers and she has an on-base percentage of .347. She is 2-for-2 in stolen bases.

Last Saturday’s contest with DePauw was perhaps Outten’s best offensive game. During the matchup, Outten had an RBI-single and then came around to score when she stole home to account for both of the Tigers’ runs.

Whitney Perry

A freshman at Chowan University, Whitney Perry led her Gates County High School team all the way to the state championship series a year ago.

Perry, who hasn’t pitched in her first season for the Braves, is hitting .500 (1-for-2) on the season and has participated in six games.

Jenna Wood

Another member of last year’s Gates County squad, Jenna Wood has played in a pair of softball games during her freshman season at Chowan University.

Dexter Carter

One of the area’s most decorated players, Dexter Carter is pitching for Louisburg College this season as a freshman.

After deciding not to sign with the Texas Rangers, Carter enrolled at the school where he has pitched a no-hitter this year.

Before going on the disabled list, Carter was 4-0 for the Hurricanes with an ERA of 2.25. He had struck out 32 batters while walking only seven in 24 innings of work.

Currently, Carter is rated as one of the top 25 junior college players in the country according to ESPN. He is one of only four freshman on the list.

As the freshman hurler works on his return to the mound, he is already throwing and is about 80 percent well. He expects to return later this season.

Annie Whiteman

Hertford County High School graduate Annie Whiteman has missed the majority of this season due to an injury.

The junior at Chowan University had season-ending shoulder surgery two weeks into the season.
