Lillie Chamblee

AHOSKIE n Lillie Mae Chamblee, died March 13, 2006 at Britthaven of Enfield Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in the Chamblee family cemetery, Ahoskie.

She was a member of

Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Rayfield Shamblee Jr. of Portsmouth, Va., and Rudolph Chamblee of Ahoskie; one daughter, Janice Wallace of Ahoskie; and 14 grandchildren.

Calvin C. James

FREDRICKSBURG, Va. n Calvin Coliage James, 56, a native of Portsmouth, died March 17, 2006 at Mary Washington Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Ashe. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be one hour before service. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his mother, Doris Pierce James; one daughter; one son; three brothers; four sisters; and five grandchildren.

Kurt R. Spain

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Kurt R. Spain, 45, a native of Portsmouth, died March 18, 2006, in Cameron, N.C.

Spain was a mechanic at Dominion Auto Wholesale in Chesapeake.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth &uot;Betty&uot; Spain of Chesapeake; two children, DeAnna Starr Spain and Lucas Kurt Spain, both of Windsor; three stepchildren, Jonathan Daniel Vertz, Mary Frances Vertz and April Leigh Vertz; his parents, Jesse and Anna Spain; a brother, Charles E. Spain; and four grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor, by the Rev. Forest Jones. The visitation will begin Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Francis Gay Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1146 Rodgers St., in the South Norfolk section of Chesapeake.

Louise F. Shepherd

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Louise Frances Shepherd, 91, a native of Northampton County, died March 17, 2006, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was the widow of Newton Shepherd.

Mrs. Shepherd retired from the International Garment Workers Union after 40 years of service. She attended Lynnhaven Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Survivors include her son, Alvan Lawrence Turner of Philadelphia; her daughter, Rebecca Catherine Smith of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 184-B Pritchard Road. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Worldwide Work of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Altmeyer Funeral Home is in charge.

COLERAIN n Donald Lee Salisbury, 41, a native of Bertie County, died March 18, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Powellsville, by the Rev. Vernon Lassiter. Burial will be in the Salisbury family cemetery, Hexalena. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Debra Outlaw Salisbury; sons, Donald Salisbury Jr. of Connecticut, Roderick Outlaw of Lewiston and Deaudra Casey of Ahoskie; his mother, Agnes Salisbury Wiggins of Colerain; brothers, John Arthur Downing of Powellsville, Joe Williams of Virginia, Willie Wiggins of Ahoskie, Larry Salisbury of Murfreesboro, Johnnie Salisbury of Greenville and twin brother, Ronald Salisbury of Colerain; sisters, Annie Mae Dukes, Agnes Simpson, Virginia Freeman, Maxine Rankins and Gladys Salisbury, all of Powellsville, Rosa Battle of Windsor, Marion Swain and Viola Cherry, both of Colerain.

Rascoe Jr., 63, a native of Bertie County, died March 20, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include a son, Carl Rascoe of Connecticut; his mother, Alfredia Butler; brothers, John Rascoe of Lewiston, Joseph Rascoe, Louis Rascoe, Monroe Butler and James Saunders, all of Bridgeport, Conn., and Horace Duncan of Penn.; sisters, Jannie Williams and Mollie Hayes, both of Lewiston and Angela Butler of Bridgeport, Conn; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Catherine Tate

NEWBURGH, NY n Bishop Catherine Tate, 77, a native of Bennettsville, SC, died March 16, 2006 at St. Luke Cornwall Hospital, Newburgh.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at New Piney Wood Chapel Church, Gates. Burial will be in the Cross family cemetery, Gates. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a son, Robert H. James of Gates; one sister, Gracie Townsome of Trenton, NJ; and one granddaughter.

Sherman Leary

COLERAIN n Sherman Leary, 78, a native of Bertie County, died March 20, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ashland Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. W.J. Best. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include a brother, Samuel Leon Leary; sisters, Annetta Leary, Stephany Leary, Pheobia Overton, Valorie Lassiter and Catherine Leary, all of Colerain; Bryan Basnight of Powellsville and Avis Harrell of Harrellsville; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

MURFREESBORO n James Lee Powell, 74, a native of Hertford county, died March 20, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Haven Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, by the Rev. Lloyd Gatling. Burial will be in Carver’s Park Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hertford County Undertakers Chapel, Winton.

Survivors include three sons, Bernard Powell and Leonard Powell, both of Chicago, IL, and Willie Powell of Glendale Heights; two daughters, LaTasha Powell of Chicago and Retha Ancrom of Washington, D.C.; five brothers, Cleveland Powell, Joseph Powell and William Powell, all of Murfreesboro, Linwood Powell of Boston, Mass., and Raymond Powell of Flint, Michigan; three sisters, Mildred P. Cooper and Sarah Allen, both of Murfreesboro and Lula Bussey of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Eula P. Ward

AHOSKIE n Eula Parker Ward, died March 21, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Harrellsville. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Ward was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Joseph Larry Ward of Crofton, MD., and Jeffery Ward of Ahoskie.
