Northeast tops PCA

BELHAVEN – Northeast Academy improved to 3-1 on the season Monday.

The Lady Eagles’ softball squad scored in six of seven innings to roll past Pungo Christian Academy 14-6.

In the first frame, Heather Langston got the Eagles started with a single to right. She scored moments later on an RBI-triple by Lyndal Brown.

Brown stole home when LeAnn Barnes received a walk to make it 2-0. Barnes came all the way around on steals and swiped home to make it 3-0.

In the second stanza, designated hitter Lori Coggins singled for the Eagles. She scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0.

In the third frame, senior Laura Boone singled and went to second on a sacrifice by Brown. She scored when Lindsey Bridgers delivered an RBI-single that made it 5-0.

The Lady Eagles plated three in the fourth frame. Jessica Duncan started the inning with a walk, following by Coggins also receiving a free pass. Langston singled both runners home and then scored on a Boone triple that made it 8-0.

In the fifth frame, senior Samantha Cook singled and scored on a Coggins RBI-double. Coggins went home on a Langston RBI-single that made it 10-0.

Pungo plated two in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to get within 10-3 before Northeast scored four times in the seventh stanza.

In the seventh, Duncan walked before PCA recorded two outs.

Langston singled to send Duncan home before scoring herself on a Boone triple.

Brown then cleared the bases with a two-run homer that made it 14-3.

PCA added three in the seventh, but Northeast held on for the win.

The Lady Eagles are 3-1 overall and 1-1 inside the Tarheel Independent Conference after the victory. They will host Ridgecroft School at 4 p.m. today (Thursday).
