AHOSKIE – Gates County used a seven-run eighth inning to topple Hertford County here Friday.

The Red Barons got the seven runs in the extra frame after being tied with the Bears at 5-all after seven complete. GCHS won 12-5.

With the game deadlocked, the Red Barons started the seventh with a single by Matt Beasley. He went to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a Jonathan Wester single. Courtesy runner R.J. Harrison scored Dustin Briggs RBI-groundout and Wester scored moments later when Ben Bright reached on an error.

Jonathan Dail singled and Nick Wilson walked to load the bases for the Red Barons.

Bright was forced home when Chad Gurganus was hit by a pitch.

Dail and Wilson came around to score on a John Morris single. Gurganus and Morris then scored on a Beasley single to make it 12-5.

Wilson pitched six innings for Gates County before giving way to Bright, who picked up the win while throwing the final two frames.

HCHS started Chris Mizelle, who went seven innings. Ryan Matthews pitched the final inning and suffered the loss.

The Red Barons started the game’s scoring in the first frame when they plated four runs.

Wester singled to start the rally and went to third don a Briggs double. Wester came around to score on a Bright sacrifice fly and Briggs scored when Dail reached on an error.

Wilson and Gurganus walked to load the bases before Morris had an RBI-single and then Travis Badget reached on an error. Those developments scored Dail and Wilson to make it 4-0.

Hertford County responded with two in the bottom of the same frame.

Matthews singled to left before Michael Burton walked. Matthews came around to score on a Heath Britt RBI-single to right field and Burton scored on an error on the play to trim the deficit to 4-2.

Gates County added a run in the top of the sixth inning when Morris doubled and scored on a Wester single to make it 5-2.

HCHS plated three in the home half of the sixth to deadlock the score.

Andre Lyles had an infield single and went to third when Mizelle reached on an error. Lyles scored on a Logan Kinlaw RBI-groundout and Mizelle scored on a Latrell Ashe RBI-single to left.

Ashe came around to score on a Richard Burns single to center that tied the game at 6-all.

The win improved the Barons to 4-4 on the season while dropping HCHS to 0-6.
