Annie Richardson

ENFIELD n Annie Richardson, 87, died March 6, 2006 at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Marie Harrell

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Marie Harrell, 73, a native of Corapeake, died March 2, 2006.

Mrs. Harrell was a former CBN counselor, and a member of New Covenant Church Ministries and was a mother of the church. She was the former first lady of Wynnfield Baptist Church in Philadelphia and New Calvary Baptist Church in Suffolk.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Melton Harrell of Chesapeake; two daughters, Olivia Thompson and Pamela Scott of Chesapeake; four sons, Samuel Harrell of Arizona, James Harrell of Norfolk, Percy Harrell of Virginia Beach and Pastor Arnold Harrell of Chesapeake; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in New Galilee Baptist Church. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake is in charge.

Elizabeth “Lib” N. Newlin

Elizabeth “Lib” N. Newlin, 92, of Burlington Manor, Burlington, NC, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2006, after a brief illness.

Lib was born to Annie Elizabeth Morrow Newlin and John Wilbur Newlin in southern Alamance County. She graduated from Eli Whitney High School and attended Guilford College.

Married in 1934, Lib was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Harvey R. Newlin.

Lib worked for the Ration Board during World War II, and retired from the Western Electric Company in 1973.

After retirement, Lib and Harvey traveled extensively, gardened, and became active in the Democratic Party. Lib was a long time member and past president of the Burlington Civinette Club, and was a member of the Battle of Alamance Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The Burlington Civitan Club named Lib Woman of the Year in 1983. She was the ultimate volunteer, for many years, helping at local hospitals, Loaves and Fishes, Burlington Woman’s Club Thrift Shop, the Alamance County Historical Museum, and many other organizations.

Lib was an active member of Front Street United Methodist Church, serving on various boards, committees, and circles. She served a term as president of the United Methodist Women.

A quiet woman with a wry sense of humor, Lib will be remembered as a wonderful mother and grandmother, generous volunteer, and excellent baker. Her pies, cakes, cookies, rolls and homemade breads highlighted family Sunday dinners, and her handmade Christmas candy was a treat to anticipate.

Lib is survived by her children, Carolyn Newlin Liverman of Murfreesboro, NC, James W. Newlin of Raleigh, NC; three grandchildren, Lisa Carol Liverman of the Wilmington, NC, Laura Liverman Powell (John) of Richmond, VA, and Nathaniel Hill Newlin of Raleigh, NC; two great-grandchildren, Claire and Graham Powell of Richmond, VA; her brother, Marvin Newlin of Saxapahaw, NC; and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be directed to the Harvey R. and Elizabeth Newlin Scholarship Fund at Guilford College, 5800 West Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27410, the Alamance County Historical Museum, 4777 South Highway 62, Burlington, NC 27215 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements were by Rich and Thompson Funeral Services, Burlington, NC.

Visitation was from 7:00- 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington. The funeral service was at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at Front Street Methodist Church, Burlington, NC.

Thomas C. Lawendowski

SOUTH MILLS -Thomas Carl Lawendowski, 60, died March 6, 2006.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in the Bunch family cemetery, Gates County. Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge.

James W. Burden

WINDSOR – James William Burden, 89, a native of Aulander, died March 7, 2006, at his home. He was the widower of Kathryn Burden.

Burden was an active farmer and was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church, the Purdie Masonic Lodge of Windsor and the Windsor Ruritan Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from NASA as an aerospace researcher.

Survivors include his son, Jimmie W. Burden of Windsor; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the graveside at Colosse Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Allen L. Lancaster. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Wooten Marion Odom

Wooten Marion “Burrhead” Odom, 85, of North Colony Avenue, passed away at home on March 7, 2006. Born in Ahoskie, North Carolina, he was the son of Wooten Daniel Odom and Evelyn Williford Odom. Mr. Odom was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Perry Odom.

He was retired as a partner in Farmers Tobacco Warehouse and owner of the Red & White Food Store in Ahoskie. Mr. Odom was a former member of the Ahoskie Tobacco Board of Trade and the Ahoskie Rotary Club.

Mr. Odom was a veteran of World War II, having served as a captain in the USMC in the Pacific theater. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1943.

Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Marie Odom of Norfolk, Va.; his son, Wooten Daniel Odom II of Ayden, NC; one sister, Katherine Jernigan of Ahoskie, NC; one nephew, William Robert Jernigan of Huntsville, AL; one niece, Katherine J. Ward, one great nephew, Cameron B. Ward and one great-niece Katie Ward, all of Williamsburg, Va.

The family would like to express their gratitude to all friends who were so supportive during the past few years, especially Ms. Janice F. Raynor who cared for our father.

A memorial service will be conducted on Friday, March 10, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ahoskie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 159, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910. Immediately prior to the service, the family will receive friends at the church at 10:00 a.m. The Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements.

Chester S. Goodman

CORAPEAKE n Chester S. Goodman, died March 5, 2006 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at New Middle Swamp Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Wesley Boone. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Goodman was a member of New Middle Swamp Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Chester L. Goodman of Corapeake and Kerry Goodman of Chesapeake, Va.; one brother, Wells Goodman of Waterbury, CT; four sisters, Lucinda Clay of Long Island, NY, Martha Ralph of Suffolk, Laura Branch of Castalia and Molly Goodman of Old Say Brooke, CT; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Linda Evans

AHOSKIE n Linda Rose Brittenham Evans, 58, a native of Hertford County, died March 6, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. She was the widow of Ralph Henry Evans Sr.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Ange. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Mrs. Evans was an assistant manager of the Earl Theater for many years.

Survivors include her son, Ralph Henry Evans Jr. of Ahoskie; three sisters, Peggy Askew of Ahoskie, Jean Barmer of Woodland and Johanna Brittenham of Ahoskie; and a brother, Julian Brittenham of Ahoskie.

Carl Pritchard

AHOSKIE n Mr. Carl Wayne Pritchard, age 52, of Ahoskie, NC, died March 7, 2006 at his home.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 9, 2006 at 3 p.m. at Creech Memorial Baptist Church in Ahoskie, NC, with the Rev. Tom Ravan officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie. The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m.

Mr. Pritchard was born July 9, 1953, in Hertford County, NC. He was predeceased by his father, Carl Pace Pritchard. He was a truck driver who worked for Commercial Ready Mix for over twenty years and then worked for Marine Terminal for five years. He was a member of Creech Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley White Pritchard; his children, Carl Wayne Brickhouse of Ahoskie, Ann Marie Fajna of Lawrenceville, Va., Melissa Dawn Pritchard and Justin Wayne Pritchard, both of Ahoskie; his mother, Elizabeth Hall Tanyer of Ahoskie, NC; his sisters, Teresa Pritchard Evans of Como and Mary Elizabeth Gibson of Franklin, Va.; his stepmother, Linda Pritchard Askew of Ahoskie; and two grandsons, Hunter and Cody Fajna.

Bertha I. Gatling

SUNBURY n Bertha I. Gatling, 90, a native of Gates, died March 6, 2006 at Obici Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John AME Zion in Sunbury by the Rev. Samuel Buck. Burial will be in the Gatling family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, William Gatling of Sunbury; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

ROCKY MOUNT n Jesse Nickson, 76, died March 5, 2006 at Nash General Hospital.

AULANDER n Melissa Nicole “Nikki” Harrell, 26, a native of Hertford County, died March 6, 2006 at UNC Chapel Hill.

Survivors include her father, Yancy D. Harrell; her mother, Linda Harrell; two sons, Ty’lik and Aliterrick Harrell; and one sister, Tiffany Harrell.

Margaret G. Cherry

OAK CITY n Margaret G. Cherry, 78, a native of Crisfield, Md., died March 6, 2006 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Lewiston, by Dr. James E. Jones Jr. Burial will be in the Cherry Family Cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a missionary and on the Hospitality Committee at Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Cherry of Suffolk, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Lester Thompson

HARRELLSVILLE n Lester Thompson, died March 8, 2006 at his home.

HARRELLSVILLE n Mary Haughton Swain, died March 6, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Queen W. Jones

HARRELLSVILLE n Queen W. Jones, 92, a native of Hertford, died March 7, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home.

Survivors include a son, Franklin Harris of Long Island, NY; two daughters, Viola L. Jones of Raleigh and Francine Harris of Brooklyn; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Harrellsville Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert L. Lewis. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery, Harrellsville. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Harold T. Overton

WINDSOR n Mr. Harold Thomas Overton, age 58, of NC Hwy. 305, Windsor, died Tuesday, March 7, 2006 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Overton was born Oct. 5, 1947 in Pinetown, NC, the son of the late George Vernon Overton and Margaret Marie Overton. He was an Army veteran and a retired mechanic.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harden Overton; his children, Robert Taylor, Lisa Hoggard and Margaret Mizelle, all of Askewville and Thomas Overton of Williamston, NC; his brother, Vernon Overton of Fayetteville; his sister, Edith Overton of Hope Mills, NC; three grandchildren, Austin Overton, Carman Mizelle and Kenzie Mizelle.

Funeral services will be held Friday, March 10, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Askewville Assembly of God Church with the Rev. R.O. Denton officiating. Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor, NC. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
