Lawrence Academy swept a pair of season-opening games this week.

The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning of a contest with 2-A Halifax Academy Wednesday and grabbed a 12-6 win.

Then, on Thursday, the Warriors pounded Columbia High School 20-8.

In Wednesday’s victory, the Warriors started the game with three runs in the first inning and then exploded for eight in the third to take control of the contest.

Senior standout Dusty Todd hit a homer in his first swing of the year in the bottom of the first inning to pace those three runs.

Todd (1-0) pitched three and two-thirds innings to pick up the win. He gave up just two hits and four runs while walking three and striking out four.

Jobie Thomas led Lawrence with a 2-for-3 day at the plate including a homerun, a double and two runs batted in.

Jacob Harrell was 2-for-4 with a homerun, a double and two RBIs while Todd was 1-for-4 with a homerun and an RBI.

&uot;We looked really good with it being our first game,&uot; second-year skipper Robert Kravitz said. &uot;Offensively, we hit the ball and we hit it hard, forcing them to make tough plays.

&uot;Halifax is a good team and we are fortunate to have won,&uot; he added.

On Thursday, the Warriors improved to 2-0 on the season when they scored 12 runs in the third inning to rally from a 6-1 deficit.

Jonathan Brantley pitched three innings to get the victory. He struckout four while giving up six hits.

&uot;We came out flat and it almost backfired on us,&uot; Kravitz indicated. &uot;We still looked really good hitting the ball and our pitching has been fair.

&uot;We are playing pretty well to be so early,&uot; he added. &uot;We better improve fast because we play six games in six days next week against 2-A schools including Rocky Mount, Parrott and Harrells.&uot;

Monday the Warriors will travel to Halifax Academy for a rematch. The game will start at 3:30 p.m.
