Etta M. Reid

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Etta M. Reid, 65, a native of Como, died January 23, 2006, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Mrs. Reid was a former member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, Como.

Survivors include her husband, John J. Reid Sr.; five daughters, Deborah Moore, Dana Smith and Arnetta Reid, all of Portsmouth, Belinda Drew of Norfolk and Tonya Reid of Chesapeake; three sons, John J. Reid Jr. of Portsmouth, Thomas Reid of Norfolk and Keith Reid of Suffolk; seven sisters, Margaret Wiggins and Mary Gatling, both of New York, Sylvia Parker of Mapleton, Katie Jordan, Edna Everette, Rosa Jordan and Celeste Williams, all of Portsmouth; a brother, George D. Bailey Jr. of Fredericksburg, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Marcus Brown. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.

Carrie Flood

SUFFOLK, Va. – Carrie &uot;Viola&uot; Flood, 93, a native of Bertie County, died January 22, 2006, at her residence. She was the widow of Vernon e. Flood Sr.

Mrs. Flood was retired from the National Basket Company after 20 years of service. She was a member of Tabernacle Christian Church and was formerly a member of the Senior Choir and No. 2 Choir. She was one of the first Bible Class teachers, Secretary of the Sunday school, Delegate Representative of the Sunday School Union, previously served on all usher boards, captain of Christmas programs and was secretary of the church for a number of years.

Survivors include three daughters, Velma E. Warren, Vivian Terese Vaden and Mary H. Davenport, all of Suffolk; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral was conducted. Friday in Tabernacle Christian Church by the Rev. Dr. Carlton R. Upton Sr. Interment was in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.

Raleigh Booker Jr.

NORFOLK, Va. n Raleigh Booker Jr., 62, a native of Bertie County, died January 24, 2006 in his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Philippi Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Smallwood family cemetery, Lewiston. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Booker was retired from Harris Tire co. as a tire changer.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Smalls Booker of Norfolk; six sons, James Reynolds, Michael Booker, Leslie Booker, Jones Booker and Drewitt Booker, all of Virginia and Jason Smalls of Maryland; four daughters, Georgia Reynolds and Vandora Benton of Virginia, Judy Collins of Florida and Fatima Horton of Ahoskie; three brothers, George Booker Jr. of Cofield, Henry Walker of Chesapeake and Rudolph Walker of Colerain; five sisters, Lauralee Jones and Elizabeth Faison, both of Cofield, Lottie Robinson of Winton and Minnie Harrell of Norfolk and Annie Walker of Portsmouth; 28 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Johnnie Joyner

MURFREESBORO n Johnnie Joyner, 66, a native of Northampton County, died January 21, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Carver Park Cemetery, Murfreesboro. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include four sisters, Alberta Vincent, Maegertha Mixon and Annie M. Joyner, all of Richmond, Va., and Collen J. Joyner of New York City, NY.

Donald L. Brinkley

AHOSKIE n Donald Legray Brinkley, 66, of West Troy Street, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

Mr. Brinkley was born in Northampton County, a son of the late Jodie W. and Lessie Copeland Brinkley.

He was a member of Menola Baptist Church, an Army veteran and was retired as assistant plant manager for Bennett Box and Pallet Company, Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Boswell Todd Brinkley, a son, Donald E. Brinkley and wife, Celeste of Hickory, NC; a step daughter, Betty Todd Earley and husband, Alton W. of Harrellsville; sisters, Betty Brinkley Baggett and Edith Brinkley Stocks of

Powellsville; brothers, Jack Elbert Brinkley and wife, Janie of Aulander, David Earl Brinkley and wife, Theresa of Woodland, Starkey Leon Brinkley and wife, Dorothy of Chesapeake, VA, Quinton Copeland Brinkley and wife, Frankie of Virginia Beach, VA, Linwood Elton Brinkley and wife, Ada of Roxobel; step-grandchildren, Hayley Ward, Whitney Ward, Penny Santa and Derrick W. Earley; and step great grandchildren, Ashlee Coyne and Matthew Coyne.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2006, at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Billy Presley and Rev. Anita Thompson officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday, prior to services.

Evelyn G. Harrell

Evelyn Goodwin Harrell passed away this week due to a heart condition in Virginia Beach at the age of 77. She grew up in Edenton, N.C. and later married and moved to Va. Beach, Virginia. She was a hairdresser and had her own Va. Beach beauty shop for most of her career. She was also Director of the Petersburg Home for Ladies for three years. In her later years, she moved to Reno, Nevada to live with her youngest son, Billy Harrell for 10 years. In 2003 she moved back to Edenton, N.C. to be at Primetime Retirement home. In the last couple of years, she moved to Marian Manor Assisted Living Home in Va. Beach, so her daughter, Mary Lively could be actively involved in her care.

Evelyn is survived by two brothers, Thurman Goodwin (Florida) and Edward Goodwin (Edenton, N.C.) and her four children, Billy Harrell (Reno, Nevada), A.J. Harrell (Roseville, California), Iris Harrell (Portola Valley, California) and Mary Lively (Va. Beach, Va.

A funeral service was held at Macedonia Baptist Church in Edenton, N.C. on Friday, January 27th at 2 p.m. Any donations to be made in her honor should go to Macedonia Baptist Church, where she had continued to tithe in her last years, as it was the church of her childhood. Funeral services will be conducted by Evans Funeral Home on 516 Virginia Rd. in Edenton, N.C. There will be a wake for anyone wishing to pay their last respects Thursday, January 26th, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Evans Funeral Home.

John D. Muse Jr.

John Dewitte Muse Jr., 83, of Granite Falls, NC, passed away on January 20th, at home after a short illness. He was born on September 8th, 1922 in Henderson, NC to the late Dr. John D. Muse Sr. and Martha Britt Muse.

He is survived by his wife of 56 + years, Jessolyn Muse, of the home, two sons, John D. Muse III (and wife Hope) of Statesville and Jesse Anderson &uot;Andy&uot; Muse of Louisburg, one daughter, Martha Lee Muse of Jefferson, two grandchildren, Melanie Muse Moore of Asheville and Christopher Muse of Louisburg, a sister-in-law, Carolyn Muse of Hampton, VA, two nieces and a nephew of Tarboro, NC, and one niece of Hampton, VA, several cousins, several grand-dogs, and many, many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

There will be a memorial service at the First United Methodist Church in Granite Falls at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 28th. Everyone wishing to attend is welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the United Methodist Church – Lakeside Drive, Granite Falls, or to your local food bank or homeless shelter.

Addie H. Garrett

WINDSOR n Addie “Gail” Hoggard Garrett, 74, died January 25, 2006 in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Edgewood Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Lee. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Edgewood Baptist Church Parking Lot Fund, 348 US 13, Windsor, NC 27983.

Mrs. Garrett was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church and the Women’s Pray Group. She organized Cub Scout Pack #5 and was formerly the Senior Adult Director and Sunday School teacher at Edgewood.

Survivors include her husband, Afton E. “Harry” Garrett of Windsor; three sons, Robert Garrett of Oxford, Michael Garrett of King George, Va., and Martin Garrett of Clifton Forge; one sister, Nettie Garrett of Goochland; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Charlie Albertson

PINK HILL n Charlie Dempsey Albertson, 85, died January 25, 2006 at Lenoir Memory Hospital. He was the widower of Dunnie Sanderson Albertson.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pink Hill Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hallsville FWB Church Cemetery, Beaulaville. A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to help the family with the cost of burial expenses.

Albertson was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include one daughter, Betty Albertson Exum of Pink Hill; two sons, Jimmy Albertson of Deep Run and Roger Albertson of Lewiston; one sister, Iona Albertson Pickett of Wallace; one brother, Lee Troy Albertson of Clinton; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

Donald Holloman

GAITHERSBURG, Md. n Donald “BKA” Duck Holloman, died January 23, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. John Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Lebron Britt Jr. Burial will be in the family cemetery. A viewing will be held from 12 noon-7 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Holloman Jr. and Eric Holloman, both of Gaithersburg; one daughter, Stacy H. Vincent of Gaithersburg; his parents, Paige Holloman; stepfather, Walter Clark of Ahoskie; three brothers, Ernest, Clinton and Tony Holloman, all of Gaithersburg; and six sisters, Dianne Prietsomonaco and Shelia Horne, both of Ahoskie, Patricia Holloman of Maryland, Gail Holmes of Greensboro, Rene Ryan of New Jersey and Judy Cross of Huntsville, AL.

Justion Powell Sr.

ROCKY MOUNT n Justion L. Powell Sr., 78, died January 23, 2006 in East Orange, NJ.

Eleather Vinson

AULANDER – Eleather Vinson, 87, a native of Hertford County, )

died January 25, 2006 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

She was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she was a Deaconess and in the Willing Workers Ministry.

Survivors include five sons, David Vinson of Seoul, Korea, Joseph Lee Vinson of Bronx, NY, Jacob Vinson of Norfolk, VA, Lee Otis Vinson of Murfreesboro

and Donald Earl Vinson of Aulander;

four daughters, Elenia Vinson Hardy of Ahoskie, Dorothy Ann Vinson Dorsey of Bronx, Shirley Vinson Parker and Phyllis Vinson Fennell, both of Murfreesboro; 33 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Interment will be in the church cemetery.
