Oscar Scott Sr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –

Oscar Scott Sr., a native of Seaboard, died January 13, 2006. He was the widower of his first wife, Johnie Mae Scott.

Scott worked for a year as a service station attendant before becoming a laborer at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) in support of the war effort. In 1943, Mr. Scott was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in the Quartermaster’s in the South Pacific for the duration of World War II.

Survivors include his stepdaughter, Ann Tomorrow Henry of Miami; daughter, Virginia Sue Chandler of Portsmouth; son, Oscar Scott Jr. of Virginia Beach; 18 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Fisher Funeral Home by the Rev. Oscar Scott III. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Portsmouth. Condolences may be offered at www.fisherfuneral.com.

Katrina Burnett

FAYETTEVILLE n Katrina Johnson Jordan Burnett, 71, a native of Perquimans County, died January 12, 2006 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. She was the widow of Charlie Jordan and Clarence Burnett.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Poplar Run AME Zion Church by the Rev. Freeman and Pastor Annie Johnson. Burial will be in the Johnson family cemetery, Winfall. Stallings Memorial Chapel, Hertford, is in charge.

Survivors include five daughters, Diana M. Turner and Minnie Al Jordan, both of Brooklyn, N.Y., Charlene V. Jordan-Stewart of Upper Marlboro, Md., Kimberly A. Jordan of Plainsboro, NJ and Cynthia Faulkner of Fayetteville; two sons, James P. Jordan of Raleigh and Bobby D. Jordan of Fayetteville; three sisters, Ethel M. Moore, Sophia Burke and Alice Felton, all of Winfall; one brother, James Clifton White of Windall; and 13 grandchildren.

Clara M. Askew

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –

Clara M. Askew, 91, a native of Ahoskie, died Jan. 14, 2006, in Maryview Medical Center.

Mrs. Askew was a member of Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Noble Street Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Henry Jones and Minister Chapman. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth chapel, is in charge. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Ruby L. Roberson

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Ruby Lee Roberson, 75, a native of Gatesville, died January 17, 2006, in a Portsmouth hospital.

Mrs. Roberson was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Adrian W. Roberson; a daughter, Betty Lou Roberson; and a son, Larry Wayne Roberson, both of Portsmouth;

Edgar L. Moore

KELFORD n Edgar Lorenza Moore, 82, a native of Bertie County, died January 18, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Willow Oak AME Church, Rich Square, by the Rev. J.B. Baker. Burial will be in the Moore family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Moore was a member of Willow Oak AME Church and a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Bazemore Moore of the home; his sons, Stanley Moore and Larry Moore, both of Kelford; two daughters, Barbara Jean Moore of the home; a brother, Dallas Brown; a sister, Amaza Stark of Washington, D.C.; 11 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Wayland Ruffin

AULANDER n Wayland Earl Ruffin, 69, a native of

Bertie County, died January 19, 2006 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday at Aulander First Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Ruffin and the Rev. Edwarner Ruffin. Burial will be in Cladie Hardy Ambrose Memorial Gardens. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Ruffin was a member and deacon of Aulander First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his brother, Rudolph Ruffin Jr. of New Castle, DE; and his sisters, Elaine Toland of Hampton, Va., Louise Cherry of Aulander, Mildred Beale of Norfolk and Marion Lee of Lewiston.

Mary P. Parker

EURE n Mary P. Mullen Parker, 86, a native of Gates County, died January 19, 2006, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Parker was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include a daughter, DeLoris P. Speight of Sunbury; five sons, Alvin N. Parker of Chesapeake, Johnnie B. Parker and Douglas G. Parker, both of Eure, Freddie G. Parker of Nashville and Joseph D. Parker of Ahoskie; a sister, Juanita M. Freeman of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner, Rev. Roger Kiker, and Rev. Billy Presley.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, and other times at the home of Johnnie and Carolyn Parker.
