Betty L. Giles

PORTSMOUTH – Betty Liverman Giles, 83, a native of Ahoskie, died in January.

She worked at the Norfolk Naval Air Station and Portsmouth public schools before retiring from the Naval Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth, where she was a member of the Willing Workers. She also attended Trinity Baptist Church in Ft. Valley, Ga., after moving there when she became ill.

Survivors include three children, Cynthia Archie, Linda Jackson and Leonard &uot;Bump&uot; Giles; a sister, Bernice Jones; and three grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday in Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. W.S. Hampton. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth chapel, was in charge. Condolences may be sent to www.corprewfuneralhome.com.

Carrie J. Edwards

RICH SQUARE n Carrie Johnson Edwards, 84, died January 15, 2006. She was the widow of Raymond A. Edwards.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Uzzell United Methodist Church, Smithfield, Va., by the Rev. Norman Galliomore. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will begin receiving friends at 10 a.m. until service time on Thursday at the church. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Mrs. Edwards was a member of Uzzell United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Raymond Eugene Edwards of Fredericksburg; and her grandchildren.

Levy Lassiter

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. n Levy G. Lassiter, 67, a native of Woodland, died January 10, 2006.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwayne Jones. Burial was in the church cemetery. Smith-Whidbee Funeral Home, Rich Square, was in charge.

Darrell L. Putney

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Darrell Lamont Putney, 30, died January 13, 2006 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses by Brother Michael Edmonds. Interment will be in the Mills and Mayo family cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home Chapel, Roanoke Rapids.

James Belfield

ROANOKE RAPIDS n James “Fats” Belfield, 62, died January 18, 2006 at Duke Medical Center, Durham.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Cleatrice Mitchell

AHOSKIE n Cleatrice Mitchell, died January 15, 2006 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Ahoskie Baptist Church by the Rev. Patrick Young. Interment will be in the Mitchell Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Mitchell was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Harold E. Mitchell, Whalon W. Mitchell and Ira W. Mitchell, all of Ahoskie; and four daughters, Marjorie Riddick, Gloria Parker and Sherol Bass, all of Ahoskie and Cynthia Kelly of Lumberton.

Gary H. Spivey

WINDSOR n Gary H. Spivey, died January 16, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph White. Interment will be in the church cemetery, Windsor. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Spivey was a member of Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Gary Spivey of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Lucy Davis of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Allen Spivey of Windsor; and five grandchildren.

Daniel L. Warren

MURFREESBORO n Mr. Daniel Lee Warren, age 72, of Mount Tabor Church Road, Murfreesboro, NC, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006 at his home.

Mr. Warren was born Oct. 3, 1933 in Norfolk, Va., the son of the late Daniel Edgar Warren and Mary Elizabeth Simpson Warren. After retirement from the US Navy he enjoyed farming. He was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Daisy Louise Davenport Warren; his son, Daniel Lee Warren, Jr. and his wife, Linda of Murfreesboro, NC; his daughters, Elizabeth Warren of Murfreesboro, NC and Danielle Baker and her husband, Joey of Rich Square, NC, and Tiffany Gail Tenhet and her husband, Greg of Murfreesboro, NC; a sister, Donna Fulcher and her husband, George of Elizabeth City, NC; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, January 21, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Mount Tabor Baptist Church with the Rev. Wint Hale and the Rev. Gregg Parisher officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC.

The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Friday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home.

Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made to Mount Tabor Baptist Church, Children’s Playground Fund.

Nonie Harris

AULANDER – Nonie Leigh White Harris, 86, of the 100 block of Windsor Street, died Wednesday, January 18, 2006, in Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Mrs. Harris was born in Bertie County and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Leroy Harris, Jr. of Roanoke Rapids and Reese Harris of Manteo; eight grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Tom Ravan.

Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. on Thursday and will assemble at the funeral home prior to services on Friday.
