Edwin T. Forbes

MURFREESBORO – Edwin Tully Forbes, 85, of the 500 block of Lakeview Dr. died January 20, 2006 at Lake Prince Woods Center, Suffolk, Va.

He was a native of Hertford County, the son of the late James Madison and Fannie Cobb Forbes, owned and operated Forbes Insurance Agency from 1962 to 1985, a member of American George Masonic Lodge # 17 Murfreesboro, N.C., a member of the Sudan Shrine Temple, New Bern, N.C. and he was a Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict, and was Pearl Harbor survivor.

Surviving are his wife; Polly Rowell Forbes, one daughter; Joan F. Chambers and husband Donald, Social Circle, Ga.; one son; Thomas Edwin Forbes and his wife Lisa, Murfreesboro, N.C.; four grandchildren, Nancy Etheredge, Marcia Abernathy, Clifton Edwin Forbes, and Corey Thomas Forbes; one great-grandchild, Benjamin Etheredge.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, January 23, 2006, at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lee Canipe officiating, with burial following in Riverside Cemetery with Military Honors.

Bettie Keys

COLERAIN n Bettie Keys, 86, a native of Bertie County, died January 20, 2006 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas E. Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

She was a member of Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church, the Shepherd Staff and past senior choir member.

Survivors include her sons, Joseph Capehart, Calvin Keys and Donald Keys, all of Colerain, Willie Keys and Daniel Keys, both of Norfolk, Va.; one daughter, Joyce Leary of Portsmouth; one brother, Robert Capehart of Philadelphia, Pa.; one sister, Mary Etta Winborne of Edenton; 10 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Gloria Jones

AULANDER n Gloria Dean Jones, 60, a native of Hertford County, died January 21, 2006 at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Sandy Outlaw and the Rev. Paul Edwards. Burial was in Job Cemetery. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, was in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny “Buddy” Jones; one son, Johnny Bradford “Brad” Jones; and a brother, John Corbett Outlaw, all of Aulander.

Elaine Adams

WINDSOR n Elaine Jobe Adams, 82, a native of Orange County, died January 21, 2006 at Three Rivers Nursing Home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Cashie Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis Conner and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial was in Edgewood Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to the Bertie County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 74, Windsor, NC 27983. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, was in charge.

Mrs. Adams was a member of Cashie Baptist Church and the Baptist Women. She was retired teacher’s aide and also taught knitting.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Winston Adams of Windsor; two sons, Michael Adams of Ahoskie and Franklin Adams of Manteo; three sisters, Margaret J. Hicks of Elon, Marie J. Ashley of Meban and Sarah J. Tolar of Cedar Grove; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

John Arrington Jr.

ROCKY MOUNT n John Arrington Jr., 58, died January 19, 2006.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at The New Morning Star Church of Christ, Rocky Mount. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Bertha L. Riddick

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Bertha L. Riddick, 96, a native of Gatesville, died January 19, 2006. She was the widow of Philip E. Riddick.

Mrs. Riddick received her teacher training from State Normal School, Elizabeth City, (now ECSU), and taught elementary grades before working with her husband managing their grocery business, Riddick’s Market. She was a member of Lebanon Grove Baptist Church, Gatesville.

Survivors include her siblings, Burnett Riddick, Oliver Riddick and Lillie R. Lynch; children, Beatrice R. Gray, Phillip L. Riddick, Jacquelyn R. Harris and Benjamin L. Riddick; nine grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday in First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Springs. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Mattie Robertson

RICH SQUARE n Mattie Lucille Robertson, 74, died January 21, 2006 at Roanoke Valley, Rich Square.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, Va. Massey Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include a sister, Madelyn Robertson of Georgetown, Texas; and a brother, Thomas Robertson of Aulander.

Harlee Miller

COLERAIN n Harlee Peyton Miller, 82, died January 22, 2006 in his home. He was the widower of Georgia Voliva Miller.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Colerain Baptist Church by the Rev. Garland Cline and the Rev. Donald McNair. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Miller was a member of Colerain Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis Collie of Falls Church, Va.; three sisters, Sallie Cowan of Merry Hill, Nancy Bazemore of Ahoskie and Joyce McNair of Raleigh; and one grandson.

Carroll W. “Nick” Beasley, Maj. USAR, (Retired)

COLERAIN – Carroll Watford &uot;Nick&uot; Beasley, 82, of South Main Street, died Sunday, January 22, 2006, at his home.

Mr. Beasley was born September 20, 1923, in Bertie County, a son of the late John Cecil and Mable Claire Morris Beasley of Colerain.

He attended the Citadel prior to his entry in WWII and graduated from Wake Forest University after the war.

He was a retired NCNG Major and a veteran U.S. Army Air Corps Pilot in WWII.

Nick was an active member of Colerain United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer.

He was employed as manager and retired after 40 years from Beasley Oil Company of Colerain, NC.

He was an avid sportsman and member of Tar River Gun Club.

Mr. Beasley is survived by his wife, Ella Beth McCrery Beasley; his daughter, Camille Beasley

Soule and her husband, Dennis of Windsor, NC; a son, Louis Carroll Beasley of Nags Head, NC; a sister, Anne Beasley Gurganus of Williamston, NC; and grandchildren, Charles Taylor Spruill, Jr. and wife, Elizabeth, Claire Hunter Spruill, Warren Cody Spruill; and great-grandchildren, Brooks Beasley Spruill, II, and Charles Jenkins Spruill.

He was predeceased by a grandson, Brooks Beasley Spruill.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, at Colerain United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Walter Johnston, III, officiating.

Burial will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery with military honors.
