WINDSOR – Speaking to J.H. Rose’ girls basketball coach Tommy Peacock, before his team’s match against Bertie, it was obvious where his focus would be for the game. &uot;Jessica Breland killed us last time we played them.&uot; Peacock stated &uot;I think that she had a triple double, and I didn’t think that she played exceptionally well, yet it was still too much for us&uot;.

On Wednesday night Peacock’s team was up for the challenge of trying to slow down Breland. Unfortunately for the Lady Rampants, Breland, was up for them as well as Bertie held on down the stretch for a 55-45 win at home.

Breland’s stat line read: 26 points, 14 rebounds, 10 blocks, and five assists.

With the Lady Falcons’ transition game stalling, Breland showed how superior of a ball player she is by making the mental decision to dominate the game on the defensive end.

Breland stayed within herself and never lost her composure as she scored six points in a close first quarter that ended with the score tied 11-11.

The visitors tried to counter the Bertie superstar with heady guard play from LaQuasha Jordan, who led the Rampants with 16 points.

Bertie’s Tierra Perry tallied 14 points with the majority of her baskets coming off fast breaks created by Breland’s Dikembe Mutombo impersonation in the paint. The game remained a seesaw battle and the half ended with the Lady Falcons, holding a two-point advantage.

Back to back lay ups by Perry early in the third quarter pushed the Falcon lead to six, but shots by Abbe Brooks, and Randi Watts got Rose back in it the Lady Rampants took the lead 31-30 with two minutes remaining in the quarter.

Breland scored nine of Bertie’s next 11 points as the Lady Falcons took control of the game early in the final period. The bottom line being that whenever Brealand wanted to impose her will on the game she did, and Rose found out, again, why the Lady Falcons have only one loss this season, number 51 Bertie.

When asked if some of the earlier internal problems that Bertie’s girls were experiencing had been resolved Coach Lyons-Bennett said, &uot;Yes, we’ve got everything worked out. We’re ready to play ball now&uot;.

At 17-1 that’s scary news for opponents.
