Roads and railway crossings will be under construction in Northampton County for the next several weeks.

According to Jack Liverman, County Maintenance Engineer for the Department of Transportation, the railroad crossing in George on U.S. 258 will close Monday morning and will remain closed throughout the week.

Crews from DOT will be working to replace the railway crossing with a concrete slab similar to the one used on Main and Church streets in Ahoskie as well as the Conway crossing on U.S. 158.

&uot; These railroad crossings are in pretty poor condition,&uot; Liverman said.

While U.S. 258 is closed between Woodland and Rich Square, traffic will be rerouted with detour signs.

Travelers will be directed from N.C. 35 to N.C. 305 and into Rich Square, according to Liverman.

The second closing is scheduled the following week when the railway crossing in Potecasi on N.C. 35 is scheduled to be closed. That roadway will be shut down on Monday and reopen on Saturday.

While the changes are being made in Potecasi, traffic will be rerouted to Rich Square down N.C. 305 to Griffintown Road (S.R. 1502) and back to N.C. 35.

Another closing will occur February 13-17 when the railroad crossing in Severn is tentatively scheduled to be replaced.

That crossing will be in the town of Severn, near the Severn Peanut Company and will also likely be closed for a week.

These closings come near the same time as the scheduled closing of Phillips Hill Road (S.R. 1365) near Conway, which is slated for closure from January 30 through February 10.

That closure is necessary to allow DOT crews an opportunity to replace a pipe underneath the roadway.

Phillips Hill Road is located just east of the Conway town limits and serves as a connector between U.S. 158 and N.C. 35.
