Elizabeth H. Outland

PENDLETON n Elizabeth V. Harris Outland, 89, of the 1300 block of Vaughan Creek Road, died Saturday, January 7, 2006, in Roanoke Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Outland was born April 29, 1916, and raised in Portsmouth, VA, a daughter of the late, Ronald Earl and Elnora Midgett Harris.

She was a member of Severn Baptist Church and was secretary for Westhaven Baptist Church for 14 years and a homemaker.

The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care for their care and support during her stay there.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, E. Ann Parker of Pendleton, NC; her son, David Lee Outland of Thomson, GA; sisters, Iris Vick of Portsmouth, VA, Mildred Welch of Chandler, AZ; brothers, Ara “Bum” Harris of Portsmouth, VA, Phillip Harris of Nine Mile Falls, Wash., Jacki Harris of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Sydmor Harris of Portsmouth, VA; grandchildren, Colleen Davis, Lori Newsome, Michael Bailey, Shawn Holloman, Sharlene Smith, Shane and Keith Outland; and great grandchildren, Bryce Rauhe, Calissa and Garrett Smith, Colin and Kate Bailey, Matthew Holloman, Colin Holloman, Lance, Nicki, Brandi and Lexi Newsome, Shelbie, Austin and Madelyn Outland.

Mrs. Outland was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Collin David Outland and an infant daughter.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at Severn Cemetery, with the Rev. Tim Hogan, officiating.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Monday, and other times at the home of her daughter, Ann Parker.

The family will assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Severn Baptist Church, 305 Main Street, Severn, NC, 27877, or to Severn Volunteer Fire and Rescue.

Archer Ulysses Hargrave

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Archer Ulysses Hargrave, 81, a native of Como, died January 4, 2006, in his home.

Hargrave attended Mill Neck and C.S. Brown High School in Winton. He worked as a rigger for the Newport News Shipyard and Dry Dock Company and retired after 35. He was a member and supporter of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife, Nannie B. Hargrave; his son, Randolph Ulysses Hargrave of Portsmouth; and two grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Mount Carmel Baptist Church by Pastor E.T. Knight. Interment was at the Diamond Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Franklin. Elvin N. Vaughan Funeral Services was in charge. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.rhargrave1@cox.net.

Shirley J. Courteau

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Shirley J. Courteau, 74, a native of Colerain, died January 7, 2006, at a local hospital.

She is survived by a daughter, Maria Courteau Wood of Chesapeake.

Virgie L. Koziol

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Virgie Leicester Koziol, a native of Bertie County, died January 4, 2006. She was the of Frank C. Koziol.

Survivors include a brother, Sidney A. Leicester of Waverly, Va.; stepson, Frank C. Koziol Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepgrandchildren and two stepgreat-grandchildren of Baltimore, Md.

Mrs. Koziol graduated from St. Vincent de Paul Hospital as a registered nurse in 1941. She retired from Maryview Hospital in 1979 and had also worked at Portsmouth General Hospital as well as private duty nursing.

A graveside service was conducted Monday at Olive Branch Cemetery by the Rev. W. Thomas Wood. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, was in charge.

Patrick Boone

GATES n Patrick Elroy Boone, 58, a native of Gates County, died January 6, 2006 at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Linwood Boone. Interment was in the Howell family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Boone of Gates; two daughters, Rona Reynolds of Elizabeth City and Patricia Boone of Gates; three brothers, Boone Boone Jr., Larry D. Boone and Grafton L. Boone, all of Gates; four sisters, Madgalene Lassiter, Mabel B. Dillard and Helen L. Boone, all of Gates; and three grandchildren.

Boone was employed with Newport News Shipyard and a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church. He was also an Army veteran.

Areather Sharpe

AHOSKIE n Areather J. Sharpe, 84, a native of Northampton County, died January 7, 2006 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Horace V. Sharpe.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sandy Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Mrs. Sharpe was a member of Sandy Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Joseph V. Sharpe of Dover, DE; three daughters, Iris Howington Majette of Ahoskie, Amy Sharpe Newman of Forestville, MD, and Mildred S. Greene of Summerville, SC; one sister, Eva Hope of Boston, MA; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Barbara Davis

ROCKY MOUNT n Barbara An Davis, 39, died January 5, 2006.
