Northeast holds on

BELHAVEN – The ladies of Northeast Academy swept Pungo Christian Academy here Wednesday.

In the varsity girl’s contest, the Lady Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 lead and held on for a 35-24 victory.

The third quarter was the deciding period for the Eagles as they outscored the Lady Raiders 17-3 to take a 34-12 lead. Pungo wasn’t done, however, holding Northeast to a single point in the fourth period while scoring 12.

The late surge wasn’t enough, however, as the Lady Eagles held on to secure their fifth victory of the season and their first inside the Tarheel Independent Conference.

Jeanie Hargrave led Northeast with 12 points while Lyndal Brown contributed eight and London Harrell added five. The Lady Raiders were led by senior Hunter Johnson with 11 points.

Northeast also won the junior varsity girl’s contest, getting 10 points from Betty Edwards to win 35-3. Ashley Ricks had eight for NEA.
