MURFREESBORO – Who says second chances don’t count?

Chowan’s Lady Braves scored 23 second-chance points as they took a 63-57 victory over Greensboro College here Friday night.

The Braves jumped to an early 11-6 lead, but four consecutive Pride baskets and a foul shot gave Greensboro a 13-11 advantage.

The teams traded baskets with Greensboro just out of Chowan’s reach until Joi Hazel completed a three-point play to tie the score at 19.

Keyon Sellers’ put-back pulled Chowan out front and started a 10-4 scoring run for the Braves.

At the half, Chowan held an eight-point advantage (31-23).

Chowan led by as many as 13 in the second half, but Greensboro would not go away.

Junior Staci Humphrey, the Pride’s leading scorer with 25 points on the night, only scored seven points in the first half, but would not stay quiet for long.

Humphrey hit from beyond the arc to cut the Chowan lead to 10 (44-34).

After a Chowan basket from Christina Addison, the Pride scored three buckets.

A Humphrey foul shot cut Chowan’s lead to five (46-41).

Hazel sank a foul shot and Addison scored on a steal to pull Chowan back out front by eight.

Humprey hit three shots from downtown and Katie Freeman scored in the paint to put the Pride ahead, 52-51.

The teams traded baskets, and the lead, until Addison’s go-ahead hoop gave Chowan a two-point lead (57-55).

Hazel drove the lane for another bucket to pull the Braves ahead by four.

With the clock working against them, Greensboro was forced to start fouling.

Sellers and Hazel each hit two free throws over the final twenty seconds to seal the victory.

&uot;We were on cruise control to start the second half.

Greensboro did a nice job of changing up and putting half court pressure on us,&uot; said Chowan head coach Pat Mashuda.

&uot;We tried to focus on getting the ball inside and pushing the ball back out for the outside shot,&uot; Mashuda continued.

The Braves scored 36 points in the paint.

Sellers had 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Braves.

Hazel also hit for 17 and dished out four assists.

The victory improves Chowan to 6-5.

They will host Sienna Heights College tonight (Tuesday) at 5 p.m. in their final home game of 2005.
