HARRELLSVILLE n Johnnie Wynn Sr., 76, a native of Bertie County, died December 10, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ashland Baptist Church, Colerain, by Elder Clarence Dandy. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Wynn was a member of United Full Gospel Church, Harrellsville.

Survivors include his wife, Earline Drake Wynn of Harrellsville; his father, Joe Wynn of Windsor; sons, Robert Wynn of Murfreesboro, Larry Wynn of Harrellsville and Johnnie Wynn Jr., both of Harrellsville; daughters, Eva Miller of Harrellsville, Dorothea Nichols of Colerain and Betty Edwards of Norfolk, Va.; sisters, Louise Collins and Estelle Askew, both of Colerain; brothers, Joe Cecil Wynn of Edenton and Charlie Wynn of Oriental; 28 grandchildren; and 55 great-grandchildren.

Alexzenia V. Harvey

GATESVILLE n Alexzenia V. Harvey, 96, a native of Gates County, died December 6, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Sycamore Hill AME Zion Church by the Rev. Lycurgus Harrell. Burial was in the Hall-Harvey family cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Survivors include one son, William D. Harvey of Gatesville; one brother, Danial Ralph Harvey of Gates; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sara A. Whitaker

WINTON n Sara W. Whitaker, 79, a native of York County, Va., died December 8, 2005 at the residence of her daughter in Newport News.

A funeral was conducted Monday at First Baptist Church Winton by the Rev. Jonah Walston. Burial was in the Whitakers family cemetery, Como. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Survivors include a son, Rufus Whitaker of Winton; two daughters, Nan Randall of Newport News and Lillian Whitaker of Winton; one sister, Della Russell of Yorktown; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Harvey Deloatch Jr.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Harvey Deloatch Jr., 56, a native of Ahoskie, died December 8, 2005, at his residence.

Deloatch was a retired Army veteran and a self- employed carpenter.

Survivors include three daughters, Chrielya Roberts, Gennella Foster and Chriesma Deloatch; three sisters; one brother; and 12 grandchildren.

A life celebration service will be conducted in the chapel Wednesday at 11 a.m. by Dr. Lagus McCoy . Viewing will be held Tuesday from noon until 5 p.m. J. T. Fisher Funeral Services, 1080 N. George Washington Hwy., Chesapeake is in charge. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.jtfisherfuneralservices.com.

Margaret W. Greene

SUNBURY – Margaret Whitley Greene, 79, a native of Hertford County, died December 10, 2005 in Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville. She was the widow of Herman Wayne Greene Sr.

Mrs. Greene was a homemaker and she was a member of Beulah Baptist Church in Sunbury.

Survivors include three daughters, Anna Belle Jernigan and Patricia G. Connolly, both of Suffolk and Margie G. Babb of Moyock; four sons, Roy Clyde Greene of Franklin, Herman Wayne Greene Jr. of Gatesville, Larry Thomas Greene of Sunbury and Jerry Lynn Greene of Elizabeth City; one brother, George R. Whitley of Suffolk; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery, Sunbury, by the Rev. Joe Cockrell and the Rev. Ron Parr. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

LeRoy C. Hand Jr.

CAMDEN – LeRoy Corbett Hand Jr., M.D., a native of Chadbourn, NC, and raised in Gatesville, died December 10, 2005, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Hand returned after medical school and military service, marrying Gates County native, the former Iris Langston. He then went on to serve as the area’s physician for 24 years. He served as a Coast Guard medical officer and subsequently hospital physician at Albemarle Hospital. He remained in Camden after his retirement until his death. A graduate of Wake Forest University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine, he received his post-graduate training at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. Dr. Hand served his country in the U.S. Navy for 5 1/2 years as a line officer before and during World War II. During wartime, Cmdr. Hand, then 22, was one of the youngest assigned captains of a warship in the North Atlantic Ocean. He served his country a second time in the mid-1970s when he left private medical practice to serve as a captain and medical officer in the U.S. Coast Guard assigned to Elizabeth City. Hand’s medical career began in Gates County as a family physician. His private medical practice, Gates Clinic, served the county’s residents for more than two decades, closing in late 1974. After assignment as a medical officer in the Coast Guard, Dr. Hand served as the Director of Emergency Services for Albemarle Hospital for 13 years, later establishing the Albemarle Emergency Physicians, PA. As president of this medical group for nine years, he retired in 1988. Dr. Hand was a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, a two-term board member, vice president and president nominee of the North Carolina Academy of Family Practice, a member of the Southern Medical Association, the American Medical Society, the First District Medical Society of North Carolina State and a member of Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck and Dare County Medical Society. Dr. Hand was elected to the Board of Directors of Tarheel Bank & Trust Co., Gatesville, in 1965 and served the bank for 21 years. When Tarheel Bank joined First Southern banking group in 1986, he was elected as a board member of Southern Bancshares where he retired June 1, 2005. LeRoy Hand consistently supported his faith through membership of the Gatesville United Methodist Church where he served in various leadership roles. Later transferring his membership to Camden United Methodist Church, he served for 16 years of the Board of Directors as well as other stewardships. Dr. Hand’s community service included membership in the Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126 where he was a third degree mason, election to the Gates County Board of Education of which he served as chairman for six years and membership on the Morehead Scholarship Award Committee for which he served as chairman for six years.

Survivors include his wife, Iris Langston Hand; sons, LeRoy C. Hand III, Ted D. Hand and Dean S. Hand; daughters, Linda H. Hatcher, June H. Robertson and Tara H. Ruberg; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Jean Wagoner of Murfreesboro, and his stepmother, Jimmie B. Hand of Elizabeth City.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Gatesville United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Gatesville Cemetery with military rites being accorded. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Gatesville United Methodist Church of the Camden United Methodist Church building fund.

Morris B. Holloman

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Morris B. Holloman, 75, a native of Ahoskie, died November

30, 2005, at his residence at the Russell House.

He worked as a tobacco farmer for many years. He also worked and lived in Philadelphia.
