AHOSKIE – Five churches and people in the community gathered Sunday evening December 4 at No Man’s Land on Main Street to celebrate the 2nd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting.

The sound of Christmas caroling filled the air.

The choir, composed of the United Methodist, First Baptist, First Presbyterian and St. Thomas Episcopal churches of Ahoskie was conducted by Danny Vancil, the Director of Music at First Baptist Church.

The unexpected warm weather, caroling, hot-spiced apple cider and candy canes warmed the crowds’ bodies and spirits.

Ahoskie Mayor Linda Blackburn welcomed everyone and expressed her heartfelt thanks for everyone’s hard work putting this event together.

“I am proud to be celebrating this, our 2nd annual lighting of our community Christmas tree.

Our tree has grown four feet since last year,” said Mayor Blackburn.

She continued, “The star was chosen to top the tree to remind travelers on this street to remember Christmas’ true meaning and think of our military family in harms way.”

The tree was lit and the people applauded as the colorful lights sprang to life.

The Mayor then introduced St. Thomas Episcopal’s Rev. Jeff Douglas who gave the prayer.

The evening concluded with the choir and crowd caroling, socializing and enjoying refreshments provided by Pastor David Lewis’ Church of the Crossroads.

The Star of Bethlehem’s light shining on mankind and carols like “Joy To The World” echoes Christmas’ true meaning.
