CREEKSVILLE – Hertford County swept a varsity basketball doubleheader with Northampton-East here Tuesday night.

The Lady Bears rolled to a 44-32 victory while the varsity boys secured a 39-21 win in a game that was halted in the third quarter due to a leak in the gym ceiling.

It was the second quarter which propelled HCHS to the win in the girl’s contest as the Lady Bears outscored East 14-3 in the second period to take a five-point halftime lead (19-14).

The Lady Rams led 11-5 after the first period, but Kenya Cofield scored seven of her game-high 19 points in the opening three minutes of the second quarter. She sandwiched two buckets around a trey that took the Lady Bears from a six-point deficit to a 12-11 lead.

Ashley Fountain then had two straight hoops and a free throw broken only by a Jalisa Parker bucket for East to give HCHS a 17-14 lead with 3:15 to play in the first half.

Fountain, making her regular-season debut after transferring from Ahoskie Christian School, had another hoop at the close of the period to give the Lady Bears a 19-14 lead at the intermission.

The onslaught continued in the third period when Ashley Weaver and Cofield opened the period with hoops to make it 23-14.

Cinta Long sandwiched buckets for East around a Jamie Britt hoop that trimmed the lead to 25-18, but Cofield buried a trey and Chiquitta Holloman had a score to make it 30-18 by the end of the quarter.

The Lady Rams trimmed the lead to seven thanks to buckets by Chiquitta Swain and Shaika Mason along with a free throw from Jessica Price, but Hertford County hit 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to push it back to double figures.

After the teams were tied at 5-all in the early going, Price had two hoops and a free throw to push East to the 11-5 first quarter lead.

In the varsity boy’s contest, East took an early 8-2 advantage only to see Hertford County roar back and lead by six at the end of the first quarter.

Jeremy Taylor had the opening eight points of the game for East interrupted only by a bucket from Tydreke Powell.

HCHS got three buckets from three different players – one each by Lamar Monger, Marcus Burnell and Antonio Branch – to deadlock the score at 8-all.

East eventually led 11-10 after a Taylor free throw, but Hertford County took the lead for good on successive hoops from LaMarcus Jenkins that put the Bears ahead 16-13.

Chris Mizelle, the Bears’ leading scorer with 11, had a three at the end of the quarter to make it 19-13.

Mizelle had a pair of threes and a couple of free throws in the opening four minutes of the second period to push the Bears to a 27-14 lead.

Quinton Shoulars stopped the run with a hoop that made it 27-16, but it was the final score of the quarter for the Rams.

After a LaMarcus Bond free throw, Jenkins and Wayne Pryor had successive hoops to make it 32-16. The lead was 35-16.

The third quarter saw only an exchange of hoops before the game was called with 5:55 to play in the third quarter.

HCHS coach Charles Simmons said the game would not be picked up and will be considered complete.
