Phillip A. McNeil

DANVILLE, Va. n Phillip Allen McNeil, 75, a native of Lewis Fork, NC, died November 27, 2005 at Danville Regional Medical Center.

McNeil had worked for Virginia Cigar Co. for 20 years. He also worked for Lowe’s Inc. for 23 years, beginning in Martinsville, VA as consumer sales manager and assistant store manager. He later transferred to Murfreesboro, NC, as store manager and then to Danville, VA as store manager. He was named Manager-of-the-Year in Region #1 in 1989 with Lowe’s Inc.

McNeil was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church and the Open Door Sunday School Class. Also was a member of Tuscarora Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Hamby McNeil; one son, Roger A. McNeil of Danville; and a brother, George R. McNeil of North Wilkesboro.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church Danville by the Rev. Ryan Riley. Interment was in Danville Memorial Gardens. Norris Funeral Services was in charge.

Jessie M. Holloman

Ahoskie, N.C.: Jessie Mitchell Holloman, 81, of the 200 block of Myers St. passed away early Monday morning November 28, 2005, at St. John Medical Center, Tulsa, OK.

She was a native of Ahoskie, N.C., a daughter of the late Lloyd M. and Lellie Cowan Mitchell, and was the youngest of eight children. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers; Maurice and George Mitchell; five sisters, Nedra Vanderberry Holloman, Rhue Mitchell, Lellie C. Mitchell, Rose Mitchell, and Lila Mitchell Brooks.

She was a life-long resident of Ahoskie, except for the last few months of her life, which were spent in Tulsa, OK with her loving son and family. She graduated from Ahoskie High School in 1942 and attended East Carolina Teachers College. A retired bookkeeper for Colony Pine Lumber Company and Bennett Box Company, she enjoyed working as an Avon representative for many years. She was a life-long member of the Ahoskie United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her son, Howard James “Jim” Holloman and his wife, Rebecca Woodard Holloman of Tulsa, OK.; and their children, Jonathan Mitchell Holloman, Thomas Woodard Holloman, and Daniel James Holloman. She is also survived by her nephews; Robert C. Vanderberry, M.D. of Raleigh, N.C., and Donald Mitchell, M.D. of Washington, DC, and a niece, Betsy Brooks Russell of Newport News, Va.

A funeral service will be held at Garrett Funeral Home in Ahoskie, N.C. on Saturday, December 3, 2005 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating.

Burial will follow in Ahoskie Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday prior to services, and request memorial donations be made

to the Ahoskie United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 665, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910.

Joe H. Harrell

PENDLETON n Joe Herman Harrell, 76, a native of Northampton County, died November 24, 2005 at Hampton Woods Nursing Home.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Severn Baptist Church by the Rev. Barnes. Burial will be in the family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie Harrell; four daughters, Patricia A. Lynn, Lucy M. Ruffin, both of Raleigh, Denise H. Warren and Gwendolyn H. Barnes, both of Pendleton; two sons, Joe T. Harrell and Anthony Harrell, both of Pendleton; one sister, Marion Drew of Philadelphia, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

Herbert W. Johnson

TARBORO n Herbert Walker Johnson, 83, died November 28, 2005 at his residence.

Earl Lassiter

LANDOVER, Md. n Earl M. Lassiter, died November 27, 2005.

A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Interment after viewing at Cherry-Mitchell family cemetery, Ahoskie.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Bond; one sister, Florenza Lassiter; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Jacqueline T. Evans

MURFREESBORO n Jacqueline Tower Evans, died on November 29, 2005 at Lake Prince in Suffolk, VA, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born in Oakland, Maryland on March 11, 1925 to Roger and Winnie Tower. Jackie met and wed her husband, Howard L. Evans, Jr., in Cumberland, MD and moved to Fishkill, NY to raise her family. She moved to Murfreesboro, NC in 1957 when her husband took over the family business. After many years of residing in Murfreesboro, she took great enjoyment in her second homes at Sawgrasse, in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL and in Sugar Hill, NH, and finally her retirement home located on Smith Mountain Lake at the Waters Edge, Penhook, VA. Jackie loved her golf wherever she happened to be. Jackie’s love for her birds and flower gardens in Murfreesboro and Sugar Hill, the beautiful sunsets over Smith Mountain Lake where her greatest delights and inspired her to paint in water colors and did so with enthusiasm until Alzheimer’s took its toll. She also shared her husband’s passion of renovating old homes, doing so in Fishkill, Murfreesboro and Sugar Hill. Those who knew Jackie realized that she always spoke her mind.

Howard, Jackie’s husband of over 60 years predeceased her. She is survived by a son, Terry Evans and his wife, Donna of Kill Devils Hill, NC; a daughter, Jill Vargo and her husband, Alex of Carrsville, VA; four grandchildren, Dara Brownlow and husband Jay, Dane Evans and wife Andrea, Evan Vargo and Allie Vargo, and two great-grandchildren, Carter Evans and Jacqueline Brownlow; and her beloved dog, Whoopie.

A memorial service will be held at Murfreesboro Methodist Church on December 3, 2005 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Jackie requested that memorial donations be made to the Garrett County Historical Society, address of P.O. Box 28, Oakland, MD 21550. A memorial services will be held also at Christ Community Church on December 17, 2005 at 3 p.m. in Penhook, VA.

Patricia A. Joyner

GATESVILLE n Patricia Ann Joyner Holley, a native of Hampton, Va., died November 18, 2005 at Hampton.

A funeral was conducted November 26, 2005 at Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Anderson Clary. Interment was in Hampton Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Joyner taught in the Gates County School System for over 28 years.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Holley of Gatesville; stepson, Leshaun Satterfield of Queens, NY; her parents, Lucy and John Joyner; brothers, David of Illinois, James, Michael, Jerry, Donnie and Rickie; sisters, Doris Joyner and Bettina Harris; and her goddaughter, Nedra Blizzard.

Thomas Oder

WINDSOR n Thomas Francis Oder, 81, a native of Bertie County, died November 29, 2005 in Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville. He was the widower of his first wife, Essie Griffin Oder.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lawrence Baptist Church by the Rev. J.N. Baggett, the Rev. Wint Hale and the Rev. Jack Byrd. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Memorial gifts may be made to Lawrence Baptist Church.

Oder was a retired gas and oil inspector with the NC Department of Agriculture and also had worked with Windsor Oil Co. and A.E. Brown & Sons. He was a member of Lawrence Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ray Oder of Windsor; two daughters, Frankie O. Davison of Byron, Ga., and Donna O. Pierce of Edenton; two sons, Dan Oder and Bill Oder, both of Greenville; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
