Mervin M. Earley

AHOSKIE n Mervin Mitchell Earley, 85, of West Stokes Street, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2005, with members of his beloved family by his side.

Mr. Earley was born in Ahoskie, NC, on March 16, 1920, to the late Magruda and Nola Mitchell Earley.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Angela McLawhorn Greene Earley and his sister, Cecilia Earley Garrett.

A man of many accomplishments and much great service, he is most remembered as a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather and an outstanding Christian.

He leaves to cherish his memory a son and daughter-in-law, William (Bill) Greene and Ginger Greene of Ahoskie; daughter, Lee Greene Merritt and husband, Pat Merritt of Raleigh, NC; cherished grandchildren, Patrick Merritt, Laura Lee Merritt, Austin Merritt, Eve Greene, Lauren Goodwin and Gabe May; sister, Wilma Beaman of Ahoskie; and nephews, Leroy Beaman, Harold Mitchell Beaman and numerous other family members.

He also leaves a great many dear friends from his many years of Christian discipleship and service.

Mervin served his nation proudly in World War II, in General George Patton’s 3rd Army.

For 22 years he owned and operated the fondly remembered store, Mervin’s Meat Market.

He was then employed by the Federal and State Government for 20 years where he worked as a meat inspector.

He served on the town council for two terms and was a member of the Ahoskie Kiwanis Club.

He was on the board of Hertford County Savings and Loan for many years.

Mr. Earley received the honor of Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the State of North Carolina.

He was baptized in First Baptist Church Ahoskie on August 23, 1931, and was an active member of the church for 74 years.

He served as a deacon and had a long tenure of service on the buildings and grounds committee in his church life.

His love for his family has had a lasting impact in their lives, and his life of faith, character, and kindness has served as an example for everyone who knew him.

He will be greatly missed.

There was a graveside service for the family at Ahoskie Cemetery followed by a service of celebration of his life at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 11, 2005, at First Baptist Church Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom and Rev. Billy Presley, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to First Baptist Church of Ahoskie, Heritage and Hope Fund, P.O. Box 649, Ahoskie, NC, 27910.

Tarzan Putney

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Tarzan Andrew Putney, 50, died November 8, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Hillcrest Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Garysburg by Elder Paul Ruffin. Interment will be in the Putney family cemetery. H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids, is in charge.

Carlton Macklin

WHITAKER n Carlton Macklin, 48, died November 10, 2005 at Nash General Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

William W. Shively

SAN FRANCISCO – William Wells &uot;Bill&uot; Shively, 31, a native of Portsmouth, Va., and formerly of Richmond, Va., died Nov. 6, 2005, in his home.

Shively was employed in commercial building.

Survivors include his parents, Henry Tolbert Shively and Linda Gayle Roper Williams, both of Gates;

a brother, Willie Liverman of Corapeake; a sister, Cindy Bazemore, also of Corapeake; and his maternal grandmother, Beulah Davidson of Portsmouth.

A funeral was conducted Friday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Cremation followed the service.

W. Woody Breedlove

BANGOR, ME – W. Woody Breedlove, 71, a native of Granville County, died November 8, 2005 at his residence.

Breedlove attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, and a graduate of Husson College in Bangor, receiving a bachelor’s degree in business. He was a member of Stovall Baptist Church, in Stovall, North Carolina. After retiring from the Air Force in 1978 he entered the real estate business with Century 21 Acres Away, then Century 21 Columbia. In 1985 he went with ERA Dawson-Bradford Co. in Bangor where he was licensed until recently. Woody was active in politics, he was a delegate to the State democratic conventions many times. He was appointed a dedimus Justice by Governor John Baldacci in 2004.

He was a past member of the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis, a member of the Bangor Lyons Noon Club and past president of the Bangor Night Lyons, as well as the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia Bois Breedlove; son, John Richard Breedlove of Bangor; daughters, Teresa Ann Curry of Levant and Christina Ann Coombs of Bangor; sisters, Grace Grimm of Cary and Nancy of Winter Haven, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated

Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church, 207 York Street, Bangor, with the Very Rev. Richard McLaughlin. Interment was in Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. Brooking-Smith Funeral Home was in charge.

Janice Miller

COLERAIN n Janice Bazemore Miller, 65, a native of Hertford County, died November 10, 2005 at her home. She was the widow of Dewey “Butch” Miller.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Al Jarrell. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, and other times at the home of Mrs. Miller. Memorial gifts may be made to University Home Hospice, P.O. Box 74, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a member of Riverside Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Kim Myers of Merry Hill and Stacy Maniaci of Viewland, N.J.; a son, Shea Thomas Myers of Merry Hill; a brother, Glennwood Bazemore of Lewiston Woodville; and two grandchildren.

Mary E. Powell

JACKSON n Mary E. Powell, 92, a native of Northampton County, died November 10, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Survivors include one daughter, Janie McLaughin of Jackson; one sister, Louise Shephard of Virginia Beach, Va.; one grandchild; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in Severn Baptist Church Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.
