MURFREESBORO – Repairs are coming for the Holly Hill Road dam.

The Murfreesboro Town Council approved a motion to accept a bid from McQueen Construction Inc. to repair the dam.

McQueen Construction’s bid of $128,045 was the lowest bid among three companies bidding to repair the hurricane damaged dam. McQueen’s bid came in $100,000 under the original costs estimates for the project.

In a previous meeting, council members asked town administrator Molly Eubank to research McQueen Construction Inc.

Eubank spoke with J.T. Grimes of Jewell Engineering, who designed the repairs for the dam and will oversee the project, about McQueen Construction Inc. According to Grimes, McQueen Construction is a good company with a solid reputation.

Town attorney Bob Lee also talked with the North Carolina Secretary of State’s office and they said McQueen Construction Inc. is in good standing with their office.

Repairs on the dam should be completed in 90 days or less once McQueen is awarded the project.

The bridge over the lake will probably re-open for car traffic, but the town may have to replace some railing on the bridge and a weight limit sign may also be needed for the bridge before traffic is allowed to cross.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the state should reimburse the town of Murfreesboro for 75 percent of the costs of repairs for the dam once the work is completed.
