Bethel gets sweep

VIRGINIA BEACH – Bethel Assembly Christian Academy opened their season with a sweep of Tabernacle Baptist here Tuesday night.

The Eagles pulled off an 83-76 victory over Tabernacle while the varsity Lady Eagles won 29-18.

Senior sharpshooter Trey Denton let up Tabernacle for 34 points during the contest, scoring 15 of those in the fourth quarter where the Eagles outscored the Patriots 27-26.

The key quarter for Bethel was the first when they took a 22-16 lead. They extended that advantage to 38-29 by the intermission.

Tabernacle trimmed the lead to 56-50 by the end of the third quarter.

Stephen Miller was also contributed heavily to the Eagles’ win as he had 17 points to go along with 17 rebounds.

Also in double figures for Bethel (1-0) was Josh Freeman, who hit for 15 points. Rounding out the scoring were Larry Caldwell with five, Frank Feher with five and Jonathan Hoggard with two.

In the girl’s contest, Bethel (1-0) took an early 15-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. The Lady Eagles led 17-4 at the intermission and 22-10 at the end of the third quarter.

Mindy Miller led the way for Bethel with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Kelly Hoggard had 20 boards to go along with her three points.

Scoring two each for the Lady Eagles were Karen Brown, Kelly Gudger, Martina Hill and Julia Cullipher.
