Holly M. Nixon

MACON n Holly McCleney Nixon, 52, a native of Lee County, died November 3, 2005 at her home.

Mrs. Nixon graduated from Bertie High School. She attended Pitt Community College. She was employed by the Warren County Public School System.

Survivors include her husband, David Nixon; a son, Eric Nixon of Greensboro; a brother, Bill McCleney of Merritt; and three sisters, Pat McCleney of Manns Harbor, Terry Edwards of Merritt and Mary L. Padrick of Chinquapin.

Rebecca Scott

AULANDER n Mrs. Rebecca “Becky” Carolyn Murphy Scott, age 45 of Frances Mill Road, Aulander, NC, died Nov. 7, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, NC.

Becky was born Dec. 5, 1959. She was predeceased by her father, Daniel C. Murphy.

Survivors include her husband, Gary Randolph “Randy” Scott; her sons, Gary Randolph Scott, Jr. and his wife, Bridget of Rich Square, NC and Adam Nicholas Scott of the home and his fianc\u00E9 Amanda Gurganus; her mother, Carolyn Storey Murphy of Conway, NC; her sisters, Marcia Perry of Elizabeth City, NC, April Clark and Tonya Behrends, both of Conway, NC; also several uncles, aunts and cousins.

Funeral services will be held, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steve Evans officiating. Burial will follow at the Storey Family Cemetery near Conway.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander, NC, Wednesday from 7 until 9 p.m. and other times at the home.

Paul N. Lewis

CONWAY n Paul Nelson Lewis, 83, a native of Hertford County, died November 7, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at Pleasant Plains Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert D. Richardson III. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge. In lieu of flowers, please send all donations to University Health Care Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Lewis was a member of Pleasant Plains Baptist Church where he was an usher and trustee; he was in the Union Masonic Lodge and was a member of the Meherrin Indian Tribe. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Claudia Lewis of Conway; three sons, Earl Lewis of Goldsboro, Thomas Lewis of Ahoskie and George Lewis of Roanoke Rapids; one daughter, Janet Chavis of Conway; one brother, Frank Lewis of Griffin; three sisters, Dotsie Booker of Griffin, Martha Lassiter and Mary James, both of Ahoskie; seven stepchildren; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Vernon M. Jacobs

WOODLAND n Vernon Maso Jacobs, 61, a native of Northampton County, died November 4, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland, by the Rev. Eddie Vinson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Jacobs was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church.

He is survived by a sister, Rosa Haynes of Woodland.

Edward Bond

WILLIAMSTON n Edward Lee “Fuzzy” Bond, 46, a native of Bertie County, died November 7, 2005.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel of Walker Funeral Home by the Rev. James Spencer. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. Memorial gifts may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Bond was a construction worker for Mark M. Steel.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy E. Bond of Bayboro; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Bond of Williamston; four sons, Jonathan Bond of Florence, Jason Bond of Vanceboro, Preston Bond of Washington and Matthew Bond of Alliance; and one sister, Martha Bond Caraway of Oriental.

Luella A. Farnham

MURFREESBORO & NEWPORT, ME. n Luella Alberta Farnham, 93, a School Teacher, a Funeral Director and a Homemaker died November 3, 2005 at Ahoskie, N. C. after a brief illness. She was born in Bangor, Maine, the daughter of the late William R. and Alwilda R. Hart and was the widow of John F. Farnham, whom she married in 1932.

She attended local schools in Bangor and graduated from Farmington State Teachers College, Farmington, Maine in 1931. She taught all Eight Grades of Elementary school in Renobscot, Maine. She and her husband owned and operated funeral homes in Stetson, Maine and then in Newport and Corinna, Maine until 1971. She was the first woman to be licensed as a funeral director in the state of Maine. She fully supported her husband in their businesses and during, his long tour as the State Examiner of Funeral Services. They were married for Sixty Eight years.

She was a Past President of the Newport Women’s Club, and the Methodist, Weslyan Club, the Worthy Matron and Chaplin of the Nokomis Chapter of The Eastern Star, a member of The Rebeccas, and the Daughter’s of the American Revolution. She and her husband “Johnny” enjoyed “combining business with pleasure” while traveling about the state of Maine and elsewhere in their Recreational Vehicles. They especially liked their trips “Down-East”

After the death of her husband, she moved out of the state of Maine, for the first time and purchased a home in Murfreesboro, N.C. to be near her son and daughter-in-law. She joined the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church and was active with the “Keenagers” Group. Her final years were enjoyed at the Village at Woods Edge, in Franklin, Va.

She is survived by a son David W. Farnham and his wife Carole H. Farnham of Murfreesboro, N. C., a nephew Steven Colburn and his wife Lisa of Orono, ME., two nieces Rona Hughey Leighton and her husband William of Chalfont, Pa. and Sylvia Hughey Daniels of Lewiston, ME., three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held in Murfreesboro United Methodist Church at 2:00 P. M. November 11, 2005, with the Rev. Bob Hagerty officiating. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Murfreesboro United Methodist Church, 313 East High St. Murfreesboro, N.C. 27855.

Dorothy D. Greene

AHOSKIE – Dorothy Delbridge Greene, 84, of the 100 block of Forest Dr. died November 5, 2005 in her home.

She was a native of Halifax County, a retired school teacher, a member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church, and the widow of Thomas William “Bill” Greene, Sr. and the daughter of the late William A. and Lela Knight Delbridge.

Surviving is her son, Capt. Thomas W. Greene, Jr. JAGC U. S Navy and his wife Nance, of Newport, RI.; one brother, Bill Delbridge, Norlina, N.C.; four grandchildren, Robby, Tommy, RI., Katy and Keith.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 12, 2005 at Ahoskie United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. John Dutton officiating, with burial to follow in Ahoskie Cemetery.

Violet H. Davidson

COLERAIN – Violet Hoggard Davidson 86, a native of Bertie County, died November 7, 2005. She was the widow of Johnnie Lee Davidson Sr.

Mrs. Davidson was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Rebecca D. Mann, Murfreesboro; three sons, Johnnie Lee Davidson, Jr. of Portsmouth, VA., L. Edward Davidson of Chester, Va., and Howard C. Davidson, Colerain; two sisters, Mildred Beaman, Suffolk, Va., and Virgie Johns of Virginia Beach, Va.; four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Hines Adams. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens.

Judith Strange

WOODLAND n Judith Lynn Parks Strange, 54, a native of Rich Square, died November 7, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Jackson Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is in charge.

Survivors include a son, Gary Dean Strange of Orlando, Fla.; eight sisters, Carleen Bryant, Hazel Harris, Katherine Ogburn and Mebane Griffin, all of Roanoke Rapids, Shirley Warren of Woodland, Elizabeth Hayes of Rocky Mount, Virginia Webb of Tucker, Ark., and Deborah Burroughs of Greenville; and two brothers, Larry Parks of Roanoke Rapids and Manning Parks of Woodland.

Cecil A. Newsome

WOODLAND n Mr. Cecil Arlington Newsome, age 80, of Woodland, NC, died November 8, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

Mr. Newsome was born Oct. 29, 1925 in Bertie County, NC the son of the late Willie Jackson Newsome and Mary Burkett Newsome. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Woodland Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years, Sally Liverman Newsome; his son, Steve Newsome and his wife, Beth of Burnswick, Ga.; two grandchildren, Stephanie Gainey and her husband Mark of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Kristie Newsome of Savannah, Ga.; a great-grandchild, Taylor Wilson of Roanoke Rapids; two step-grandchildren, Brooke and Cody Gainey; a sister, Ruth Isarel of Montgomery, Ala.; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held, Friday, Nov. 11, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Woodland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC, Thursday from 7 until 8:30 p.m.
