JACKSON n Let the celebration continue.

That was the decision reached here Monday morning by the Northampton County Commissioners.

County Manager Wayne Jenkins sought guidance from the county’s governing body concerning the annual Veteran’s Day Tribute held in Jackson.

He said his concern was the 10:30 a.m. celebration planned in neighboring Halifax County to welcome the new entertainment complex. That ceremony will include a Veteran’s Day celebration.

“We wouldn’t want anyone to think we were purposely not attending that event,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins said the Board could encourage Northampton County citizens to attend the event in Halifax County or they could proceed with plans already made for the Jackson event.

Commission Chairwoman Virginia D. Spruill asked how far preparations had gone into setting up the Veteran’s Day salute in Jackson. Jenkins said the people who were asked to be a part of the celebration program had been contacted.

Commissioner Robert V. Carter said he understood the concern Jenkins had, but was more concerned about the county’s veterans.

“I hate to abandon our veterans,” he said.

Commissioner James Hester said he could see both sides of the concern, but said his feelings were that the county should proceed with their celebration.

Carter asked if it were possible to send representatives to the ceremony in Halifax County, but also have members of the county commissioners in Jackson.

Jenkins said he felt that may be the best answer to the problem. He suggested that some commissioners, possibly inclusive of Commissioner Fannie P. Greene, attend the Halifax County groundbreaking which will include a Veteran’s Day salute and have others follow the time-honored tradition in Jackson.

Having received direction from the Board, Jenkins said he would continue with plans for the 11 a.m. celebration to be held in Jackson Friday morning.
