Jessie H. Bryant

POTECASI n Jessie Herbert Bryant, 92, a native of Northampton County, died October 31, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at the chapel of Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square. Burial was in Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Bryant served a tour of duty with the United States Army and returned to Northampton County to farm.

Survivors include his wife, Irene B. Bryant of the home; three daughters, Mary Katherine “Kathy” B. White of Windsor, Brenda B. West of Rocky Mount and Diane B. James of Greensboro; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Douglas T. Peele

SENTERVILLE, Va. – Douglas Thomas Peele, 60, a native of Emporia, Va., formerly of Ahoskie, died October 29, 2005 at Fair Oaks Hospital.

Survivors include two daughters; Mary Britton Peel of Arlington and Brianna Lynn Peel of Senterville; two sons, Dean Thomas Peele and Brandon Thomas Peele, both of Senterville; and his mother, Martha Britton Peele of Ahoskie.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ahoskie Cemetery by the Rev. Cameron Currin, Jr. The family will assemble at the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. prior to services. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Ellnore Lockhart

GARYSBURG n Ellnore Lockhart, 84, died October 28, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Friday at New Jerusalem Holiness Church, Garysburg, by Bishop William Easter. Interment will be in the Roanoke Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. A visitation will be conducted from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home.

Theodore Tranquillo

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Theodore Tranquillo, 80, died October 30, 2005. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Tranquillo; his children, Theodore D. Tranquillo and Gary Tranquillo, both of Grandy, Cheryl Bolton of Virginia Beach, and Steve Tranquillo of Gates; three stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and nine stepgrandchildren.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. You may offer condolences at www.mem.com.

Lonnie Overton

COLERAIN n Lonnie F. Overton, 56, a native of Hertford County, died October 30, 2005 at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Aulander First Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Stevie Lawrence. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Overton was a member and deacon of Aulander First Baptist Church. He was a maintenance worker at International Paper Company, Conway.

Survivors include his wife, Phoebia Leary Overton; daughters, Tiffany N. Leary of Colerain and Taiwawnn Nicole Overton of Ahoskie; son, Tkella Leary of Colerain; sister, Anna Bazemore of Absecon, NJ; brothers, Gilbert Ballance and Jessie Overton, both of Aulander; and two grandchildren.

George Demery

NEW BERN – George Washington Demery “Duke”, 66, a native of Bertie County, died October 28, 2005 at Craven Regional Medical Center, New Bern.

Demery was a retired farmer.

He is survived by a brother, Clyde Demery of New Bern.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hunter’s Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie by Rev. Larry Cooper. Cremation will follow services.

Leon Miller

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Leon Miller, 62, died October 26, 2005.

Miller served with the United States Air Force for three years.

Survivors include his wife, Julia White Miller of Colerain;

two daughters, Mekeda Miller of New York and Lenore Wilson of Brooklyn; his father, Vernon Miller; and a half sister, Diana White of Virginia.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thompson.

Interment will be in church cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Ahoskie is in charge.

Louise Edwards

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Louise Edwards, died October 28, 2005 in New York.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Second Baptist Potecasi Church by Elder Herman Mike.

Burial will be in the Lankford family cemetery. Hunter’s Funeral Home, Murfreesboro is in charge.

Franchola Johnson

ROCKY MOUNT n Franchola Johnson, 44, died October 30, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at Thorne Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Phillips. Visitation will be conducted from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Rocky Mount.

Ronnie Lewis

COFIELD – Ronnie Lewis died October 28, 2005.
