Shelton Asbell

WINDSOR n Shelton Thomas Asbell, 71, a native of Bertie County, died September 16, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital, Greenville.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Walker Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Michael Bradley.

Asbell was a member of Greens Cross Baptist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Louise Asbell Stancil of Windsor; and a brother, James Travis Asbell of Newport News, Va.

Billie Winstead

ENFIELD n Mrs. Billie Peele Hardison Winstead, 80, a native of Enfield, died September 16, 2005 at her home.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Enfield Baptist Church by the Rev. Marc Sanders. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Enfield Baptist Church, Music Program, 200 West Burnette Avenue, Enfield, NC 27823.

Mrs. Winstead worked as a bookkeeper for Enfield Building Supply Company and worked for 30 years as a bookkeeper for Bellamy and Company, Inc. She was a member of Enfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, David Winstead; two sisters, Eloise Copeland and Betsy Armstrong, all of Enfield.

Dalton L. Jernigan

COLERAIN n Dalton Lee Jernigan, 62, a native of Bertie County, died September 17, 2005 at his home.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elm Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Preston Jernigan. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Jernigan was a retired farmer and a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Williams Jernigan of Colerain; a son, Jason Jernigan of Colerain; a daughter, Phyllis Jernigan of Apex; a sister, Verlie Wood of Portsmouth, Va.; two brothers, Herman D. Jernigan of Gastonia and Willis R. Jernigan of Powellsville; and two grandchildren.

Amaryllis L. Riddick

HOBBSVILLE n Amaryllis Lang Riddick, 77, a native of Gates County, died September 16, 2005 in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk, VA. She was the widow of James Roy Riddick Sr.

Mrs. Riddick was a retired Physical Science teacher with the Perquimans County schools system, she was a member of the Gatesville Senior Citizens Club and Sandy Cross Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday School, and was active in its Women’s Missionary Union, having served as its director and also holding offices on the Associational level.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda R. Ricks of East Peoria, IL; two sons, James R. Riddick, Jr. of Edenton and Steve P. Riddick of Hertford; three brothers, George L. Lang Sr. and Daniel W. Lang, both of Gatesville and the Rev. Joseph D. Lang of Oak Ridge; and two granddaughters.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will be in the Gatesville Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Sandy Cross Baptist Church or to the Gates County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.

Rachel M. McDaniel

SUNBURY – Rachel Mooney McDaniel, 88, a native of Hyde County, died September 17, 2005 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. She was the widow of Ralph McDaniel.

Mrs. McDaniel was a homemaker and a member of Damascus Christian Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Camilla Bunch of Dinwiddie, Va.; her sister, Ruth Midgette of Washington; and three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Clarence H. Sparks

SUFFOLK, Va. –

Clarence Harley Sparks, 78, a native of Marion, died September 16, 2005, at his residence. He was the widower of Beulah F. Sparks.

Sparks retired from McLean Contracting as an electrician.

Survivors include three daughters, Ruth Stripling and Janice Mitchem, both of Suffolk and Lois S. Daniel of Chesapeake; two sons, Ernest Lee and James Dale Sparks, both of Gates County; a sister, Irene Adkins of West Virginia; 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Stewart McCarter. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel is in charge.

Lydia G. Taylor

CAPRON, Va. – Lydia G. Taylor, a native of Gray, Va., died September 12, 2005, at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church where she served on the usher board and was the church's financial secretary until her health failed. She was also a trustee and, in earlier years, served in the adult choir. For 24 years, Lydia was employed with the Department of Corrections.

Survivors include her husband, Emmett D. Taylor; three sons and a daughter, Kenneth D. Taylor of Murfreesboro, Fabian L. Taylor of Drewryville, Va. and Emmett D. Taylor of Jarratt; her daughter, Tracie Barnes of Emporia. her mother, Gertrude D. Green of Yale; three sisters, Helen Green of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ann Little of Hopewell and Everlean Jones of Yale; four brothers, Caleb B. Green Jr. of Hampton, Melvin of Havelock, Ronald Green of Emporia and Larry Green of Philadelphia; and six grandchildren.

A funeral was conducted Sunday in Morning Star Baptist Church in Capron by Pastor Earl Thompson. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pearson Funeral Services was in charge.

Earnest Cherry

WINDSOR n Earnest Linwood "Little Baby" Cherry, died September 10, 2005.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Cherry's Funeral Home Chapel, Windsor, by the Rev. Ralph White. Burial was in the Cherry family cemetery.

Cherry was a member of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He worked as a porter until retirement.

Survivors include six sisters, Thelma Hendrix of Atlantic City, NJ, Georgia Holmes and Dorothy Cherry, both of Pleasantville, Doris Cherry of Mays Landing, Diane C. White of Spotsylvania, Va., and Elizabeth Cherry of Windsor; and four brothers, Henry Cherry and Donald Cherry, both of Ahoskie, Milton Cherry of Pleasantville and James Cherry of Franklin.

Carrie R. Bond

WINDSOR n Carrie Ruth Bond, a native of Windsor, died September 13, 2005 at Wesley Long Hospital, Greensboro.

A funeral was conducted Saturday at Speller's Chapel Church of Christ by the Rev. John Evans. Burial was in the Bond family cemetery. Cherry's Funeral Home was in charge.

Survivors include three daughters, Kenya Thomas and Ramonja Williams, both of Baltimore, Md., and TaNasha Williams of New York; two sisters, Adele Doty of Greensboro and Annie Stanley of Ernul; and 12 grandchildren.

Buck Speller

BOSTON, MA n Buck Speller, a native of Bertie County, died September 16, 2005.

Willie V. Perry

COLERAIN – Willie Vick Perry, 60, a native of Bertie County, died September 16, 2005 at the Ahoskie House.

Perry was a janitor for the Red Apple.

Survivors include his wife,

Mary Perry of Portsmouth, VA;

one daughter, Keisha Perry of Portsmouth, VA.;

one sister,

Carolyn Smith of Winton;

three brothers,

Joseph Perry and John Henry Perry, both of Powellsville, and Roy Lee Perry of Ahoskie.

Emma H. Cherry

HARRELLSVILLE – Emma Harrell Cherry, 86, a native of Hertford County, died September 19, 2005 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Cherry was a farmer. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Annie Cooper of Harrellsville;

one son, Seliman Whitfield of Virginia; four sisters, Virginia Watford of Trap, Elizabeth Turner of Brooklyn, NY, Hattie Mabine of Ahoskie and Viola Perry of Winston-Salem;

one brother,

Malachi Harrell of Corapeake;

two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
