Eva M. Harrell

COLERAIN n Eva Miller Harrell, 82, a native of Bertie County, died September 14, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Maynard A. Harrell Sr.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillcrest Cemetery by the Rev. Gary Kline. The family will receive friends at Mrs. Harrell's home, 110 W. Main Street on Saturday. Memorial gifts may be made to the Colerain Baptist Church. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Mrs. Harrell was a homemaker and a member of Colerain Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Maynard A. Harrell Jr. of Plymouth; a sister, Dorothy White of Elizabeth City; a brother, H. Fretwell Miller of Merry Hill; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth E. Harris

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Kenneth Earl Harris, 41, died September 8, 2005 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home by the Rev. Lynne Bradley. Interment will be in Lebanon Church Cemetery, Halifax.

Janie D. Blanchard

SUFFOLK, Va. – Janie Dare Blanchard, 90, a native of Hertford County, died September 13, 2005, in Smithfield.

Mrs. Blanchard was a retired brigadier of the Salvation Army. Commissioned as an officer in 1938, Brig. Blanchard served the Salvation Army in several appointments in the Southern Territory. Her last appointment was Atlanta.

Survivors include her nephews and nieces-in-law

A graveside service was conducted at noon Friday in the Blanchard Family Cemetery in Gates County by Col. J.B. Matthews. Gussie Gary

GATES n Gussie Juanita Piland Gary, 90, a native of Gates County, died September 10, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie. She was the widow of Edgar Gary.

A funeral was conducted Friday at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Gates, by the Rev. James K. Brown. Burial was on the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, was in charge.

Mrs. Gary was a retired school teacher.

Survivors include one stepdaughter, Francis Simons of Crofton, MD.; and one sister, Sophia P. Smith of Gates.

Pete H. Bazemore, Sr.

AHOSKIE – Pete Hudson Bazemore, Sr. 77, of the 400 block of South Pembroke Ave. died Thursday, September 15, 2005, in his home.

Mr. Bazemore was born in Bertie County, the son of the late Garvey and Louise Baggett Bazemore, and was a member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie.

He attended Wake Forest University, was a graduate of East Carolina University, and a Navy veteran of World War II.

Pete was a member of the Ahoskie Rotary Club and a past recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award.

He was retired as a government employee with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare.

Surviving are his wife, Betsy Tunstall Bazemore; one daughter, Jane Bazemore McEarl and husband, Michael of Cary, NC; one son, Pete Hudson Bazemore, Jr. and wife, Susan of Winston-Salem, NC;

three grandchildren, Amanda and Sarah McEarl of Cary, NC, and Pete Hudson Bazemore, III of Winston Salem, NC.

A memorial celebration of Pete's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 17, 2005, at First Baptist Church Ahoskie, with the Rev. Dr. Jesse J. Croom officiating. The family will receive friends at the home and memorial donations may be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, 521 West Myers St, Ahoskie, N.C. 27910 or to First Baptist Church Ahoskie, P.O. Kinston Smith

COMO n Leslie Kinston Smith, 73, died September 14, 2005 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Southampton County, he was the son of the late Joseph Henry and Minnie Mae Futrell Smith. Mr. Smith, an Army veteran and farmer, was a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir and served as a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Myrle Curle Smith; two daughters, Sharon Taylor and husband, Tom of Delaware, and Theresa Burgess and husband, Billy of Como; two sons, Keith Smith and wife, Kathy of Como, and Michael Smith of Forest City, NC; three stepdaughters, Regina Parker and husband, Kenny, Pamela Carr and husband, Miles, and Gay Sumner, all of Como; two former in-laws, Gail Smith of Forest City and Johnny Sumner of Como; sisters, Marie Owens of Franklin, Va., Lillian Lee of Richmond, Va., Myrtle Bunch of Atlanta, Ga., Elsie Lewis of Como; a brother, Lewis Smith of Como; nine grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Smith; and a sister, Cornelia Sexton, both of Portsmouth, Va.

Funeral services will be held at Buckhorn Baptist Church on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends are welcome at the Smith's river home at Leisure Shores, Como and on Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Buckhorn Baptist Church Building Fund or the Como Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

Ruby Bright

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Ruby Bright, 93, a native of Windsor, died September 13, 2005, in her home. She was the widow of Robert Bright.

Mrs. Bright was a member and mother of Christian Home Baptist Church, Moyock, where she served on numerous auxiliaries over the years.

Survivors include a son, Joe W. Bright; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the church with Pastor Barry C. Powell. Burial will be in the family cemetery, 437 Neck Road, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home, 1821 E. Liberty St., Chesapeake, is in charge. The family will receive friends at the home of Joe W. Bright, 433 Neck Road, Chesapeake.

Whallon Holloman

AULANDER n Whallon Holloman, died September 15, 2005 at North West Hospital, Randals Town, Md.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Second Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Roy Sharpe. Burial will be in the VA Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra Holloman Carter of Philadelphia, Pa.; one brother, Rev. Isaac Holloman of Sacramento, Calif.; and one grandchild.
