NEA goes to 9-1

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Nine was the magic number here Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Eagles of Northeast Academy won their ninth tennis match with a 9-0 spanking of Northeastern High School.

Brittany Wade led the rout with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Jenna Woods.

Also cruising to easy wins were top-seed Lyndal Brown (over Katie Bishop 6-1, 6-0) and fifth seed Betty Edwards (6-0, 6-1 over Jessica Alvarez).

Second seed Laura Boone also had a fairly easy day with a duplicate 6-1 wins over Michael Owens. Samantha Cook also grabbed a solid win, defeating Erin Murphy 6-0 and 6-2.

Chelsea Davis rounded out the singles sweep with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Saxon Gilbert.

In doubles, action, Davis and Allyson Cashwell won 10-2 while Brown and Boone grabbed a 10-3 win. Cook and Edwards won 10-4 to secure the sweep.

In exhibition play, Kelly Edwards and LeAnn Barnes secured a doubles victory.

The Tuesday sweep came one day after Northeast defeated Faith Christian 5-3.

It was Edwards who led the victory with an 8-1 thumping of M. Howell. Wade also took an easy win, knocking off S. Watson 8-3.

Boone claimed the only other singles win with an 8-4 victory over O. Bocilla.

In doubles action, Boone and Brown won 8-5 over Woodard and Bocilla and Cook and Edwards easily won an 8-0 decision. Wade and Davis led in number three doubles, but didn’t finish due to rain.

Kathryn Bryant grabbed an exhibition win over Sara Watson.

The Lady Eagles will continue play today when they travel to Gates County High School at 4 p.m.
