HCHS upsets Pasquotank

AHOSKIE – After a disappointing 5-4 non-conference loss at Southwest Edgecombe Monday, the Hertford County High School women’s tennis team bounced back Tuesday with a 5-4 upset will at home over Pasquotank High School. The Lady Bears improve to 5-5 in the conference and 6-7 overall.

&uot;I think the girls know I was disappointed after Monday’s loss,&uot; skipper Rick Heckler said. &uot;I though we were a better team, we just didn’t execute very well.&uot;

When Ally Rushing and Lyndsay Burns defeated Pasquotank’s Anna Winslow and Claire Saunders 10-8 at number one doubles, it was win number five in the match and sealed the victory.

Teammate’s Sarah Brown and Lauren Baker had earned a key win at number two doubles, 10-8 over Sarah Lilly and Caitlin Gilroy, just minutes before.

Rushing defeated Winslow 7-5, 6-0 at number one singles. Brown was defeated 4-6, 1-6 at number two by Lilly.

Baker won at number three when she defeated Gilroy 7-5 in the third-set tiebreaker.

Burns made quick work of Saunders 6-1, 6-1 at number four.

Becca Barket and Cecillia Jones lost at number five and six singles, setting the scene for the climatic finish.

&uot;Ally dug deep to defeated the very talented Winslow,&uot; Heckler added. &uot;Lauren played a very determined single’s match. Her winning shot was absolutely fantastic!&uot;

Rushing and Burns were the only singles winners for the Lady Bears against SW Edgecombe. They teamed to win in doubles, as did Brown and Baker.

Hertford County next hosts Ridgecroft at 3:30 Thursday.
