JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – According to reports coming out of the Mayport Naval Station here, the Navy has suspended a search for three sailors whose helicopter apparently crashed Saturday into the Atlantic Ocean off the North Carolina coast.

Although the Navy is not releasing the names of the missing sailors, several callers to the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald office on Monday said one of the men is from the Hertford County area. Those reports could not be confirmed as of press time on Monday evening.

However, a Jacksonville, Fla. based television station n NBC affiliate WTLV n confirmed the Navy had called off its search and rescue mission after debris from the downed Navy Seahawk helicopter was spotted in the Atlantic. No survivors were found.

The Seahawk helicopter crew has been missing since Saturday night when they embarked on a training mission off the North Carolina coast. The Navy lost communication with the aircraft just before 11 p.m. Saturday night.

The missing sailors are part of Mayport’s Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light Wing. They were on a training mission to hunt submarines off Cherry Point, NC.
