WINDSOR – One arrest led to another.

On Thursday, September 8, Corporal Richard Morris of the Windsor Police Department responded to a breaking and entering call at 103 Spruill Lane.

Morris and the homeowner, Charlie Bond, found several items had been taken from the residence, including a camcorder, DVD player and several DVDs. The investigation also revealed entry had been made through a back window.

According to Morris, he had seen a black male &uot;hanging around&uot; the area of Bond’s residence about an hour before the break-in. The same person had been seen by other members of the Windsor PD in that neighborhood several days prior to the incident.

Later, Morris picked up Saquan Delonte Speller, 28, of 345 Morning Road in Windsor. He was interviewed and confessed to the break-in at Bond’s home. He also gave a statement regarding his disposal of the stolen goods.

On Wednesday, Morris, Detective Herman Purvis and Officer David Pierce went to the residence of Elva Jarrett on Bud’s Lane in Windsor.

&uot;Jarrett met the officers at the door and invited them in,&uot; Windsor Police Chief Rodney Hoggard said. &uot; The officers stated that as soon as the door was opened, they could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside and could see what appeared to be the stolen DVD player on Jarrett’s television.

&uot; Also in plain view was a bag of what appeared to be marijuana on the sofa in the same room,&uot; Hoggard added.

At that point, officers contacted Detective Kenny Gilliam and Sgt. Charlie Harmon of the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office to assist with the search of the residence. Following the search, more stolen property was recovered.

Sgt. Harmon and his K-9 Officer DaKota searched the residence and the yard. Small amounts of marijuana residue were found in the house, according to Hoggard. At the rear of the residence, Harmon and DaKota found three larger bags of marijuana covered by a concrete block.

Jarrett was arrested and charged with possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for the storage of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernelia and possession of stolen property. He was placed in the Bertie-Martin Regional Jail under a $35,000 cash bond.
