Joyce A. Chapman

AHOSKIE n Joyce Ann Chapman, 55, a native of Bertie County, died September 4, 2005 at her residence.

A funeral was conducted Wednesday at True Way Holiness COGIC, Windsor, by the Rev. Clarence Freeman. Burial was in the Morris family cemetery, Colerain. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, was in charge.

Ms. Chapman was a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughters, Judith D. Perry of Harrellsville and Latessha Chapman and Cassandra Outlaw, both of Windsor; sons, Stevie Chapman of Middletown, Conn., Keavie Chapman of Windsor, Jerry Chapman of Powellsville and Terry Chapman of Colerain; sister, Gloria Rankins of Boston, Mass.; and brothers, Bobby Collins of Murfreesboro, Johnnie Morris of Colerain, Eddie Morris of Rich Square, Danny Morris of Boston and Dennis Morris of Ahoskie.

Robert H. Rawls

WINDSOR n Robert "Harold" Rawls, age 77, of Windsor, died Monday, September 5, 2005 at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Harold was born October 14, 1927 to the late Arthur and Sophia Mizelle Rawls. He was a veteran of Korea in the U.S. Army. He owned and operated Rawls Barber Shop in Rich Square where he cut hair for the past 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Faye Dickens Rawls; four sons, Harold Keith Rawls of Williamston, NC, Michael Glenn Rawls of Greenville, NC, Mark Stephen Rawls of Windsor, NC and David Bruce Rawls of Williamston, NC; five sisters, Irene Jenkins and Shirley Meeker, both of Portsmouth, VA, Jane Cullipher of Norfolk, VA, Betty Lyon of Powellsville, NC and Evy Hughes of Colerain, NC; a brother, Ralph Rawls of Aulander, NC; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 8, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Ebenezer Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Steve Evans officiating. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery in Windsor. The family received friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the church fellowship hall. Massey Funeral Home of Aulander, is in charge of arrangements.

Linda Bowen

WOODLAND n Linda Baker Bowen, 55, a native of Northampton County, died September 5, 2005 at her home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Woodland Cemetery by the Rev. Heath Lloyd. The family will receive friends at anytime at the home of Linda and Phillip Bowen. Memorial contributions may be made to the Woodland Fire Department or the Woodland Rescue Squad of Woodland. Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, is in charge.

Mrs. Bowen worked as a self-employed seamstress. She was an honorary member of the Woodland Fire Department and Rescue Squad, and a member of Woodland Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip "P.K." Bowen Sr. of the home; one daughter, Amanda "Mandy" Vann of Conway; one son, Phillip K. Bowen Jr. of Eure; two sisters, Mamie "Becky" Lassiter of Woodland and Faye Ray of Ahoskie; and two grandchildren.

Margaret B. Dunning

RICH SQUARE – Mrs. Margaret Brown Dunning, 91, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, at Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids.

Mrs. Dunning was a native of Northampton County. She was a graduate from UNCG and was married to Judson Dunning in 1938. Mrs. Dunning taught school in various counties mainly Northampton County, where she retired after teaching for 29 years. She was a faithful member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon. She was involved in many other capacities at the church as well. She leaves to her family a legacy of loving the Lord. Mrs. Dunning respected all people equally.

Preceding her in death are her mother, Bertha Peele Brown; her father, Everett Lucius Brown; her husband, Charles Judson Dunning; and her sister, Louise Womble.

Survivors include three sons, Charles E. Dunning of Neenah, Wis., Earl J. Dunning of Prince George, Va., and Jerry B. Dunning of Charlotte; two brothers, Dr. James E. Brown and Thomas E. Brown, both of Rich Square.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Aulander. Burial followed at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in Rich Square. Officiating was the Rev. Earl Whittemore and the Rev. Jon Dunning. The family received friends at Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, 225 Pleasant Grove Road, Aulander, NC 27805.

Richard Askew

WINDSOR n Richard Askew, 89, a native of Bertie County, died September 5, 2005 at Bertie Memorial Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church, Lewiston, by the Rev. Robert Walton Sr. Burial will be in the Veale family cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Askew was retired from Weyerhauser Lumber Company and a deacon of Woodville Plains Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Askew of Windsor; a son, James Gilliam of Yonkers, NY; a brother, Cassiel Askew of Williamsburg, NJ; and six grandchildren.

Mary E. Saunders

SUNBURY n Mary E. Saunders, 88, a native of Gates County, died September 3, 2005 at Obici Hospital, Suffolk, Va.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday at St. John AME Zion Church, Sunbury, by the Rev. Samuel L. Buck Jr. Burial will be in the Drake Memorial Cemetery, Sunbury. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at the church. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Saunders of Sunbury; two sons, William K. Saunders and Benjamin C. Saunders, both of Sunbury; one daughter, Sylvia Dark of Capitol Heights, Md.; one brother, the Rev. William A. Eason of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Vernon L. Winslow

SUFFOLK, Va. – Vernon Lloyd Winslow, 61, a native of Gates County, died September 5, 2005, in his home.

Winslow was the owner and operator of Winslow's Mobile Home Service Inc., he was a member and deacon of Liberty Spring Christian Church where he had served on the Finance and Pastor Search committees. He was a former member of the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and had served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Valery Winslow; three daughters, Janice Ellis, Stephanie and Det. Rae Ellis, all of Suffolk; three stepchildren, Lorelei Porter of Gainesville, Fla., Deborah Marie Douglas of Virginia Beach and John Barnes of Moyock; three brothers, Eddie Winslow of Gates, Bruce Winslow of Corapeake, and Don Winslow of Wilson; and 13 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Liberty Springs Christian Church by the Rev. Allen Lancaster. Burial will be in Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery, Corapeake. Friends may join the family Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to any chapter of the American Cancer Society or to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.

Jessie M. Cofield

AHOSKIE n Jessie M. Cofield, died September 5, 2005 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.
